You and I are tough buggers XXX, but that's no reason to forget entirely those who might be more fragile.

Cagivagurl rightly pointed out that thread hi-jacks happen too often (for her) - but she can choose not to read them. Once any thread goes past three pages, it means either the OP has got an answer and all the late arrivals are piling on; or it means the derailments have got a life of their own (and might actually more interesting). It's a natural law of the internet, I'm sure.

It's a natural law of conversation in real life. Real life is a contact sport.

I completed the first draft of my heart//beats story last night, which I will be my first submission to the Lesbian category. However, I never intended it to be a lesbian story from the outset, and took that path by happy accident when I made a little mistake across a couple of writing sessions where I didn’t read what I’d written previously. I decided not to correct my mistake once I’d caught it because the new direction the story was headed felt like it was the story's natural course. Once I took it further along the path, the whole written by a man thing has crossed my mind several times. If I had another month or so I’d likely ask for a woman if they'd like to beta read it, but I’ve run out of time.

Anyway, the story’s really about an unexpected and blossoming friendship between two young women, because I like to write about people doing people things. I could easily have written it without the explicit sex, except this it Lit, so, you know, I considered it would be disingenuous to gloss over the erotica part.

Welcome to the the writing-by-the-seat-of-your-pants life. Now, babe, would you like to be boring and drink some bourbon in the corner there, or do you want to join the cool kids at this table over here? Don't worry about the green stuff in the bottle, it's harmless. Well... mostly.

Sure, pass the bottle over, I could do with a drink with absinthe friends.

Feels good, don't it?
I'm a pantser so this isn't my first roll of the dice, but yeah, happy accidents are the way of life.

All the regulars here, without exception, exhibit an unabashed craving for attention, and that's fine as long as they maintain a semblance of self-awareness.
you're a regular here too, babe.

Remember: when you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also gazes into you.

I’ve found “lesbian” a little niche. In other categories your characters can flow on the tides of sexuality but in les they must remain les. I have stories in romance where characters fluidly explore without detractors but when you post in a niche I guess you have an audience who expect you to follow some rules. Like I got a lot of one bombs in inc/tab because I explored taboo instead of blood rellies. Maybe it’s time I broadened my own understanding and tried writing to an expectation.

The derailments on the current Help and Suggestions thread re: US, UK and Aussie English, with slang, and words passing their sell by date has been thoroughly interesting, and the kind of thing I lurk here for.

You actually got me to respond to this thread. Yes, I didn't know what cotton wool people are. Per one source: "Some say this is down to the curse of a 'cotton wool culture' where children and young people are failing to learn from experience, i.e. gaining bumps and scrapes from building a tree house and instead are being 'robbed' of this early key development by parents concerned for their children’s well-being."

I want to write my story - the one in my head, which will be a story by a man and is written for men. And I'm wondering if a lesbian story written thusly would be appropriate in the lesbian category, where real lesbians might not appreciate the porn-esque male brain version of a lesbian story. I do realize now, that might be a smaller group than I supposed.

I will write this story as I've planned and put it in the lesbian category. I thank everyone for their input.
Some lesbians like porn too. There is specific lesbian porn, of course, but I personally have no problem with two mainstream female pornstars having fun together. Even if it’s only for the cameras / male gaze and they are straight IRL.

Of course the “we’ll forget all about each other as soon as a cock appears and just focus on pleasing the guy” trope is pretty silly. Then not much porn that isn’t tropey. Including some lesbian porn.

I find that exact trope so annoying in lesbian porn scenes, even being a straight guy.
I don't know how much lesbian porn you have seen, but from your perspective, how much of that would you say it is made for lesbian women to enjoy? Is it some really terrible percentage?

Unless they’re male bisexuals or course. No flowing into gay territory unless you’re posting in GM.

Most mainstream porn with two women in it is two heterosexual or, at best, bi women play acting what men want to see. Then that goes for most porn regardless of the gender / orientation of the actors. Saying that, you can often tell when two female pornstars are getting into each other, as opposed to going through the motions. A lack of theatrical groans and “yes, yes, yes, lick that clit” is a clue.

There is porn made by lesbians for lesbians and I know some guys actually prefer a this more authentic take. But it’s not really mainstream.

So I'm thinking about my first lesbian story. Young lesbian woman falls for 40ish neighbor. So far, so good. However through some voyeuristic scenes she has witnessed her neighbors liaisons with women and men. It will also be a dom/sub scenario.

Would the voyeur scenes make it so that a lesbian looking for like-minded stories would be put off? I'd rather put it in EC than alienate a reader with a bad category choice.
There is no such thing as a generic lesbian (or a generic bisexual girl). I don’t have the slightest interest in CFNM, but I love @Djmac1031 ‘s Jenna series. It’s often the writing that is the turn-on, rather than the act.

[says me who has been known to write detailed sex scenes spanning one and a half Lit pages]

I like to lay and cuddle sometimes. This is very lesbian.

One of the reasons I limit my lesbian sex writing is I don't know how to write for others. For me, the flirtations between me and a partner, well Jo forever now, have always been as satisfying (if not as earth-shattering) as the sex. So, I tend to write them as reluctant or role-playing you don't know is role-play until the end.

As to all the diversions in the thread, same ole same ole.

Cuddling and stroking is so lovely IRL. Difficult to convey the magic in writing - for me anyway.

This is why I still frequent 4chan. In between all the... well, sometimes there just aren't words, but you do sometimes find amateur gems (Don't click this link. seriously, don't. you really won't enjoy it. not a bit. Best to close the browser and back away right now...)
