Dictator DeSatinist Seeks State Control Of Private Industry

AJ dying on Ish's hill of ignorance is my favorite thing this morning. I can't wait to read the rest of today's funnies!

Disney still owns most of the property but there is a large chunk in private ownership as well. It has a weird status.
Sorry, dude. That dog don't hunt.

So why isn't DeSantis doing anything about the other 1800 districts in Florida.
Who did DeSantis appoint to the board of The Villages?
I think you've nailed the coffin for DeSantis on this one.
Florida had a myriad of different, complex types of special-purpose districts. The Florida bill will impact five other government districts in addition to Reedy Creek to foster a greater degree of public oversight. Disney’s infrastructure district, established in 1966 is unique in many ways. It was established for, and its board controlled by, a single Burbank CA-based corporation. The Villages is is a community development district. These are common not just in Florida, but throughout the US. In many ways, they are similar to HOAs. The Villages board members elected by the thousands of property owners within its boundaries. Under the new bill, board members will be appointed by the governor to four year terms. Two of the 5 initial members will only serve 2 year terms. Future governors will make future appointments.

Because none of the other special purpose districts are established for and controlled by a single CA-based corporation. Five other special government districts will be affected by the bill to foster greater public oversight. The Villages is a community development district. They are very common throughout the US. It’s board members are elected by the thousands of property owners within its boundaries. Two of the initial 5 members of the soon to be renamed district will serve 2 year terms. The other 3 will serve 4 year terms. Future governors will make future appointments.

The proposed bill does not end the special district. It would rename the district and align its governance structure with hundreds of similar special tax districts in Florida, many of them set up to help farmers and other landowners (including theme park competitors to Disney) administer infrastructure improvements, The 5 member governing board currently hand-picked by Disney would be replaced by board members appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state senate. Disney would remain liable for its bond debt so the burden would not shift to the taxpayers of nearby Orange and Osceola counties as some had speculated. Disney would also retain its carve outs and remain exempt from impact fees.
Not according to the experts. Once the district is resolved and reorganized under government leadership, the debt burden AS WELL AS the responsibility for all municipal services would fall directly on the counties that have that part of the district. Disney would be relegated to paying taxes like anyone else, but not more than any other resident (or business) of those counties. So the tax burden and responsibility for services (for which Disney has been up until now) would fall on the residents of the two counties.

Nope. Had that been the reason for this action it would have been undertaken right after De Santis was elected the first time. It was only discussed and implemented after Disney voiced its opinion on the "don't say gay" bill. This is a classic case of an elected official (and elected legislature) taking retribution on a private corporation for their opinion.

There is another take on it, that if Disney sues over this they would most likely win because of the provisions in the original contract with Florida. The article seems to think that Disney is keeping mum on the whole thing because they are forging a backroom deal with De Santis. That very well could be. The other thing that could be is they are preparing a lawsuit or they have done an analysis on it and discovered that Florida would be the big loser if it is implemented. I really don't think a corporation as large as Disney is going to roll over and let someone fuck them in the ass like DE Santis is trying to do without some kind of fight.

All that said, the worrying thing for me isn't this Disney thing, it's De Santis' desire to be president and the people that have a clear view of the inside of De Santis' colon. This guy is Trump, with more brains. And that makes him way more dangerous to the country. If he does make it to the whitehouse, how often and on whom will he use the power of the government? How many will he silence for no other reason than they disagree with him or what he is doing? Those who give lip service to "freedom of speech" while simultaneously using their power to silence the opposition are the ones who are very dangerous. He is one of those.

The local TV news reporter who wrote the article you shared cites ONE attorney (who apparently isn’t even affiliated with either Disney or the state of Florida) who thinks Disney would have a case *IF* they took the state of FL to court. The governor and state legislature and their legal staff obviously think otherwise. Floridians don’t appear terribly concerned about the fate of the woke CA-based company.

The lawyer and law office are based out of Maitland Florida.

Your research ability is clouded by the results you want to find.

If Disney filed a lawsuit, they would be the plaintiff and the state of Florida would be the defendant. The lawyer cited by the local tv news reporter does not appear to be affiliated with either party. He might be, but there is nothing in the story that indicates that. What exactly is your point?

From the article:

Schumer, who represents many Central Florida governments, wasn’t buying it.

You have poor reading skills regardless of your desire to move the goalposts from your original statement.

He is a lawyer, in Florida, in Central Florida who represents many central Florida governments.

JFC you guys will bend over backwards to rationalize your heroes.

When you look at the reality of the situation, politics aside, this will saddle the tax payers of the district with billions. Also Disney downsizing 7000 positions will not help the states economy in way.

I always thought government was supposed to be about creating employment opportunities for business, and protecting the taxpayer from needless tax increases?

Guess I was wrong.

The GOP only knows governance by revenge.

See this is exactly the problem. This isn't about some nefarious deed Disney has done. It isn't about a company from California running a part of Florida so Floridians are all pissed because outsiders have a say about an area the size of one of their counties. This isn't about Disney trying to get over on the state of Florida. This is solely about a "woke" corporation that De Santis is taking retribution on for expressing an opinion. It's a blatant and undisguised attempt to shut Disney up. Apparently you are okay with curtailing free speech as long as it's someone you don't agree with. But I know for a fact from your past posts that you go hermitile if anyone questions the veracity of anything said by a conservative.

As far as the vaunted and esteemed legislature and staff of Florida, I've seen many a state (from both sides of the political spectrum) step on their dicks because the legislators thought they knew better. Ya'll seem to think Disney has no alternative and are going to just take what ever De Santis decides to do, that they are going to roll over and just accept this. AIN'T GUNNA HAPPEN. They have something in the works. What I have no idea, but after reading a few more legal opinions besides the one from the article I cited, they have several avenues to explore.

Let's see how this plays out. And when it does, when Disney finally decides to make a move, I'll do something I rarely do. I'll come back to you with an "I told you so".

Lol. A lawyer who practices in Florida, not affiliated with either Disney or the state government. Your reading comprehension is quite impressive! 😂

Nonsense. Taxpayers are not picking up the tab and there are no reports that the 7000 jobs Disney is cutting are in FL.

Nobody is curtailing Disney’s free speech. They can be as woke as they want.
