🧘🏼‍♂️🤾🏻‍♀️Getting Sweaty Again: The 3rd Circuit 🚴🏼‍♂️🏋🏼‍♀️

I wonder how much stress has to do with our weight gain/loss. I am sure it differs for everyone and I’ve heard that stress is a big cause of weight gain and/or loss. Is it because our habits change when we are stressed and so we devote less time and concentration to our wellness? Or is it on a more basic physical change in our bodies?
Stress can also affect your heart. I find exercise to be a great reliever of stress and good for my mental well being.

Cortisol (releases by your adrenal glands), which is elevated during stressful situations, can make you hungry. Cortisol helps give you boosts of energy to help flee a stressful situation (fight or flight) but also creates a blood sugar crash, which can make you crave sweets. That said, a lot of the relationship between stress and weight gain is because food is a good coping mechanism (and there’s truly nothing wrong with that), and stress can cause depression which decreases motivation for physical activity.

Chronic stress is a serious problem, both in terms of its impact on glucose and a person’s inability to cope with said stress. But briefly stressful times (acute) are a part of life (don’t I know it) and it’s more important to give yourself grace then worry about the long term impacts on the number on the scale. Most of us don’t experience chronic stress, even though it can feel like it. And the same holds true that food CAN be comforting as long as it’s not the only comforting thing. ❤️

Well, I haven't done any exercise for a little while 'cause I had covid. Technically still do, I guess, although my quarantine is now up and I'm not contagious. I will try a bike ride later today, if the weather accommodates.
Damn it, though, I keep getting setbacks on my attempt to hit 10 pullups by the year's end. I'm back down to 4 max, which is not a good feeling.

I’m sorry to hear that you have Covid. I hope that your symptoms aren’t too severe.

I hear you on being frustrated that your exercise routine has been interrupted. I remember when you were starting your goal and you were striving to do a few pull-ups. I’ve enjoyed hearing about your progress. You’ll get back to it. I hope you can get some rest.

I’m finally feeling recovered after being sick and got out for a run this morning. I definitely lost distance but I’m ok since I’m at least back out and feeling good about running. It wasn’t due to being lazy or stopping.

Later a workout after work and the. Hopefully an evening heart rate elevation if you catch my drift.

So glad you’re feeling better and you’re back at it. That’s fantastic 💜

Me too! This cold was a doozy it went from my stomach to my throat to my nose. It just seemed to drag on forever. I don’t think it was Covid since the symptoms were way different than when I had it last year. Just a regular old kick you on your butt cold. I guess those still exist :p

I am basically over it, and they were fortunately never that bad, thank you.
Biking... whew, that wasn't very difficult but it still absolutely wrecked me. I am going to have to work quite hard to recover anything.

It strikes me that your posts here are always very kind and positive/supportive, and I very much appreciate that.

Re: COVID….it’s taken most peolle I knew a few weeks of regular cardio to get back to it. Even people with minimal symptoms have had a moderate recovery time. What a weird virus.

I’m sure you’ll get everything back and make the progress you want to achieve.

I think building the habit of regular exercise is the most difficult thing to do - or at least, it's something I've always struggled with. What's working for me right now is exercising in small, manageable doses.

I used to get workout plans from gym instructors that had nine different exercises * four sets * 4/5 times a week for 12 weeks and I honestly never finished a single programme because I was so drained after each gym session that I dreaded going back.

So now I'm going to the gym three times a week, I do three exercises * 10 reps * 3 sets and I'm out. The workout itself takes less than 15 - 20 minutes and I focus entirely on form and leave the heavy weights with my ego at the door. If I get fitter and stronger in future and my routine doesn't satisfy me, I'll modify it...or not. The point is that I don't feel like going to the gym is an imposition or a massive drain on my time and I have no trepidation about going back every two days.

Someone else has probably mentioned this on here, but I find that Nerd Fitness is an excellent resource.

I agree—if you’re dreading the gym or your workout, you’re not going to be able to continue that routine. Or, if you do, it will become another stressor rather than something fulfilling.

Glad you’ve found your balance :)

Misleading workouts: what’s a workout that is more or less strenuous than you assumed it would be? For example, taking a leisurely bike ride. I was expecting it to be easy and enjoyable to just jump on my bike after having not ridden it in quite a while. It was a lot harder than I remembered it being. I used to ride my bike to work and I didn’t think twice about it but without that consistency, it was a lot more difficult.

Also gardening and housework (vacuuming, dusting, etc.). I work up a sweat gardening and cleaning. I need to look up how many calories are burned from an hour of housework.
