The difference between Communism and fascism is that those who were rich before a Communist takeover lose their wealth. Those who were rich before the Nazi takeover in Germany or the Fascist takeover in Italy kept their wealth, unless they were enemies of the new regime, or they were Jews in Germany. That is why rich people in Germany usually supported Hitler. It is why rich people in Italy usually supported Mussolini, even if they disliked each of them.

For most people most of the time loyalties of race, nation, and ethnicity are stronger than loyalties of class.

I disagree. I believe diversity is a strength, and it always has been. The problem is that, somehow, people have lost the ability to cope and so have taken refuge in raw tribalism. The internet has not helped these people. It has allowed them to find like minded people to unite with for the most outrageous ideas and given them the impression that their knowledge and understanding of everything is just as complete as the people who were formerly recognized experts in their fields.
