I may catch flak for saying it, but the most overrated film of all time, by far, IMO, is Citizen Kane.

It has clever visuals and cinematography. It's an interesting movie. it's a smart movie. But the story isn't that great. The main character isn't that interesting. The acting performances are fine, but not amazing. But for reasons I don't understand, it often is ranked as the best movie of all time. Ridiculous, IMO.

An underrated movie: Hell or High Water. This was a great recent movie with Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine that flew under the radar, so to speak. A modern crime/western with a surprising amount of depth. Smartly written. An ambiguous ending.

It got some critical acclaim but it didn't win any awards and it didn't do that well at the box office. But it's so much better than most other stuff.

One of the greatest movie pleasures is to see a movie you don't know anything about that surprises you with its quality when you see it. That's the way this movie was to me. Most movies are over-hyped, and I'm disappointed by the time I see them. Not this one.

The screenwriter, Taylor Sheridan, wrote another great underrated movie: Sicario.

Underrated - Gattaca is one of the best hard science-fiction movies, but doesn't get much love, possibly due to not having a particulary strong visual style.

Overrated - Forest Gump is a satire that has practically nothing to actually say about anything.

Overrated - Forrest Gump - dim guy is inserted into multiple historic moments, adding nothing.

Underrated - RKO 281. It's about the making of Citizen Kane, and given the time since CK was made, actually much more interesting.

I couldn't agree more. I have never been able to watch the entire movie without falling asleep somewhere during it.

I may catch flack for this...

Overrated: Any so called chick flick.

Underrated: Every so called guy flick.

Overrated - The Last Jedi - I can't believe the fawning praise heaped upon this pile of garbage by critics and some fans, although many fans did hate it too. Did they not see the poorly developed characters, bad dialogue, bad acting, nonsensical actions and reactions of characters in certain situations, bad pacing, disjointed plots that went nowhere, an overall boring story and immature pathetic attempts of humour at precisely the wrong moments? What's more, this movie perhaps more than any other is a 'sacred cow', and if you dare to suggest - like I am doing right now - that it is nothing but crap and not worth the paper the screenplay was written on its defenders are horrified. I don't remember critics fawning over any other Star Wars movie in the original trilogy, the prequels, the new trilogy and the spin-offs, why they love this one is beyond me. And I don't recall Star Wars fans defending other Star Wars movies from criticism the same way as those who love this film.

Underrated - Drop Dead Gorgeous - This smart and savage satire from 1999 had a high profile cast - Kirstie Alley, Kirsten Dunst, Denise Richards, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney, the late Brittany Murphy and a pre-fame Amy Adams among others - but reaction to it at the time of release was mainly negative or indifferent and it is a forgotten film more than 20 years on.

Overrated- Fear Street series on Netflix. Nothing but pandering while wasting great source material.

Underrated- The origional Oldboy. It was thoughtful, engauging, and best yet, unpredictable.

The reaction to The Last Jedi is fascinating. There's a strong political element to it, and that accounts for the fervor of its defenders. I thought it was trash, although not as bad as the one that followed it, which was even worse. But I've thought that every Stars Wars movie after the original trilogy was trash, other than Rogue One, which was pretty good.

Agreed. They're just milking a dead cow at this point. Still, I'll probably watch Chewbaca's spin off series when it comes out on Disney+.

Overrated: Jurassic Park. Enough said.

Underrated: 'There Will Be Blood'. Daniel Day Lewis's best performance and an excellent case study on using camera angles and scene length to set pace. A tour de force in every way and worth a revisit.

He was also brilliant in The Crucible (watched in school) and Gangs of New York.

Damn I just remembered that I've never actually seen 'Gangs of New York'.... I am gonna fix that now.
It's really good. Leonardo DiCaprio also gives a strong performance. They had Liam Neeson in the beginning of the movie, kind of wish he'd got more screen time.

I thought the prequels did a lot for world building. (Not defending them, they were pretty bad.) I also thought Rogue One, unlike the prequal trilogy and sequal trilogy, added to the origionals. It filled in plot holes, strengthened the motivations of multible characters, and fearlessly told its own story.

Rogue One was such a great movie, the characters were right, the storyline was right, the acting, directing cinematography and pacing were good. The other Star Wars movies outside of the original trilogy though ....

Over rated-No Country for Old Men...seriously, this was a stupid boring pile of drivel and if one more person tells me the hitman with the bad hair cut was bad ass....

Underrated-The Grey with Liam Nielson before he became know for the Taken movies.

No. They've duped me into watching enough Character assassinations. Besides, I already know how it ends. Rey saves the day. Obi Wan has a penis, and therefore sucks at everything.
Perfect example of wanting to use an existing franchise for the built in fan base, then shitting on everything cannon. Rey was the definition of a Mary Sue, not one struggle, not one lost fight, not one bit of actual acting in her quest to destroy the patriarchy through brain dead Kennedy

I thought the whole Star Wars series was overrated, but at least the first three (or was it four, five, and six?) had a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. They lost me when it started to take itself too seriously.

Underrated: possibly another Harrison Ford movie between his Star Wars and Indiana Jones days: Blade Runner - at least when it first came out. When I saw it in a theater in 1982, I think, I found it so weird I walked out on it. Then on a videotape viewing, I saw the whole thing and I started to get it. Seems like everyone else started to get it too.

Good, but overrated:

Way, way underrated:

This reminds me of RKO 281 - the "making of" movie for Apocalypse Now, Hearts of Darkness (much of it shot by Coppola's wife Eleanor) explains exactly where it went wrong. The worst mistake was that there was no script for Brando's Kurtz character when Marlon showed up, and most of the ending was improvised on the spot. Can be seen on YouTube, by the way.

Still, overall, an intriguing movie. I've also seen the longer director's cut, and it's obvious why most of those scenes had to go.

I saw Star Wars when it first came out, I think I was 9. The way I put it, is it filled you with wonder. It was a space fantasy, it was fun, campy, good effects for the day, great characters and Vader is still at the top of the all time villains lists. I always called Bullshit on those three being '4/5/6' Lucas never saw them being that big and wanted to keep milking the cow, there's been nothing fun about them since, they just become more pretentious, the last three with an eye rolling amount of woke tossed in for extra fun.

Useless trivia. Ford was offered the role of Dallas in Alien. He declined because he didn't want to be typecast....then did Blade Runner in 1982. Had he ended up in Alien he would lay claim to being in the three biggest sci fi movies of all time.

Useless trivia pt 2. The guy who played Chewbacca at one point was considered to be the monster in the suit for Alien...so had it worked the other way, Chewie would have killed Han in Alien

I really need a life

Here's a video by one of my favorite you tubers on the subject, he calls these segments "production hell" He's hilarious, but he also has good insights
