TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Citing unspecified examples of election fraud, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday pledged to create a law enforcement agency to investigate election crimes as part of a new package of voting laws.

Speaking at an event in West Palm Beach, the Republican governor announced a series of election law proposals for lawmakers to take up during next year’s legislative session, including new restrictions on ballot drop boxes and strengthened penalties for ballot harvesting.

DeSantis, who is up for reelection and is eyeing a 2024 presidential run, echoed many talking points on voting problems that have gained traction in the GOP following former President Donald Trump’s false claims that his reelection was stolen from him.

“There’ll be people, if you see someone ballot harvesting, you know, what do you do? If you call into the election office, a lot of times they don’t do anything. If you know that, there’s, you know, in Florida, it’s Constitutionally mandated, only citizens are allowed to vote in Florida, and yet you see examples of people, they’ll even check they’re not citizens, and they’ll still be given ballots,” he said to applause.

DeSantis spoke broadly about the proposed election police force, but a news release from his office said the Office of Election Crimes and Security would be formed “within the Department of State to investigate election crimes and fraud.”

The only way to assure that elections are fraud free is for law abiding citizens to volunteer and become part of the election process themselves. They can then monitor and be part of the vote counting process.

California already has similar units on both the state and county levels, where the county is big enough, where concerns/complaints can be directly reported. It's called the...wait for it...California Elections Fraud Investigative Unit. It rolls up under WCIT (white collar crime investigations task force) as part of the California Bureau of Investigations.

In cases where the only alternative to complaints about election related issues can only be reported to the Elections Board - that is kind of like reporting complaints of burglary to the National Brotherhood of Burglars.

In the case of both the US DOJ and the state of California these types of investigative units are established so that people can "go around" the very agencies they're filling complaints against and to provide investigators (both agents and attorneys) who are specific trained in a type of crime.

This is something that is always puzzling to me - if you think there is no election fraud, or no significant election fraud, why do you think the DOJ and many states have dedicated units?

Just politics, IMO. It is DeSantis showing his base he takes their complaints seriously.

I would have approached the whole allegations of election fraud with a different type of messaging and course of action.

Instead of telling folks "no, you're wrong" and "no evidence of it" (along with the usual slide into a thousand variations of "Jane, you ignorant slut").

I would have said "we don't believe there was, but we take all complaints very seriously, and we're going to open a public investigation with public hearings and an independent auditor".

Then, in the interests of good government let people watch the investigation unfold. Make a channel for them to bring any evidence they have and for us to consider it fully - even if it's crazy ass stupid shit like "they were moving ballet boxes in invisible UFO's" (which would be entertaining to me as well).

Instead of working to shut the complainers down - work instead to restore their faith in the system by carefully going through all the inner workings.

Conspiracies arise and thrive in the space created by a lack of information - it's a natural human tendency to fill in the blanks with our imagination (which stems from our evolutionary ability to interpret perceived threats as "real" to heighten our survival ability - we take tiny pieces of information and create whole patterns).

The 17-year-old son of Virginia Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin twice tried to cast a ballot on Election Day even though he is not yet eligible to vote, election officials confirm to News4. He was unsuccessful in his attempt to vote.

News4 is not naming Youngkin's son because he is a minor and has not been charged with a crime.

Fairfax County election officials said the teen went to the Hickory precinct polling place at Great Falls Library. The location is not the polling place assigned to his home address.

Election workers were able to determine he was not eligible to vote and didn't allow him to cast a ballot. The Fairfax County Office of Elections said it is investigating the incident.

There is a long history of intimidation and suppression in this regard, going back to the 1960s, and there will be more if these "election police" actually show up at any polling station.
