“Hammered – an Ode to Mickey Spillane” Story Event: Official Support Thread

Wait a minute… I thought submissions would be published, and the deadline to be listed as part of the Spillane challenge was Sept 30th. So which is it? I really need to know because the timeline in my Spillane story is part of my overall Iron Crowbar series.

From the OP:

I’m posting this thread to officially kick off the “Hammered – an Ode to Mickey Spillane” Story Event. Laurel will be creating the Event Page shortly, but the “go live” date is 1 October 2021, so you got a whole 11 months to think, contemplate, plan and write for this one.

11 months? No, 27 days isn't it?

I posted an extract from the first post on this thread, which was written eleven months ago.

That's what OP means: "opening post", or "original poster". I'd have thought that self-evident, but perhaps not...

I just didn't realize this thread had been around that long. :( anyway, thanks for the info.

The clue is in the number of pages and the high number of posts; and, I guess, the fact that you're new here, so didn't see it go up when it did. No drama :).

Damfino. That was certainly my understanding, yet my submission for the challenge was posted last night, despite the required tag in the administrator's box on the page. I haven't been able to find the event page, either.

They will be posted throughout September, with the final list posted on Oct. 1st.

That absolutely does NOT answer my question, so sorry.

You asked for the deadline. My repost of the first post answered THAT question by correctly stating the deadline is 1st October. The other posters then noted that you can submit anytime through September.

And I will submit it before Oct. 1 if I can just get all the edit and rewriting done.

No, I asked if the stories would be published upon submission, or held back and published all at once. And your reply did not answer what I asked.

Well, it's up.

One of the longest gestation periods of any story I've ever written (I started right when the announcement went up last year). But, it's up: Frank Driver, Private Eye. The Case of the Slicer-Dicer.

Really quite happy with this one, in fact. I like the 1947 world-building aspect of it, a lot.

I'm curious as to how others took to the challenge, but don't know if I can wait until Oct. 1. Feel free to post your story here so that we don't have to go hunting for it. ;)

Question for the group:

I've styled my story after Robert Parker's "Spenser" as I've mentioned before. Has anybody here -- who also styled like a specific author -- mentioned that fact in their introduction to their story, or are you staying silent about it?

Thanks,

Thanks,

I tried to do justice to Raymond Chandler (with perhaps a touch of Dashiell Hammett), but didn't say anything about it because I didn't want to sound pretentious.

Yeah, my concern exactly. Seemed like painting a target on your back.

Not a problem for me. I've not actually read any noir authors (I know the genre more through movies and cliché), so my noir voice is my own. If my story does read like anyone else, it'll be news to me. I think that I've turned at least one of the tough male tropes on its head, so we'll see what reaction that gets.

But for the first time ever, I'm up against the deadline to get it finished, which is not like me at all. Still, it's coming along, and a beta reader likes it, so it's all good, so far...

Well, at last, I have submitted the story. I have to see if it even passes inspection. It has little sex, so I put it in the Non-Erotic category. The damn thing is over 25,000 words.

I can't help but wonder if this will bit me in the back side. I have a small following, they expect a certain kind of story from me, and this isn't it.

Submitted tonight. "The Tilsons Got Killed." The longest story I have ever written on Lit. Submitted into Novellas. A first time for that.

Good luck and have fun everyone.

My guy's just had the snot beaten out of him, so now it's personal.

Also, I'm on a promise; so now all I've got to do is wrap it all up, deal with the bad guy, figure out who the hell is in the next sex scene, and get to the ending (which is already written). How many days we got?

17 days, but it has to be reviewed before it goes up, so cutting it close, baby boy! 😘

EDIT:
Meanwhile, I'm on pins and needles wondering if they will ever put mine live or send it back to me.

Okay, hogging the thread am I? Yes, I think I am.

My story, The Case of the Rich Man's Wife, description not so good, From the files of Theodora Drummond — Private Investigator, goes live tomorrow. 😃

Plenty of time. My last story went up in two days.
