“Hammered – an Ode to Mickey Spillane” Story Event: Official Support Thread

Unbelievable, I got mine finished. Currently with an editor for a dust over, then to get it published.
Just submitted mine. I had a ton of fun writing this one, running with the noir tropes, turning a few on their head.

Coming Soon to a movie theater near you: "When it's Safe to Die", a story of love, lust and revenge, starring Dan Arbogast and Ruby Jones.

I couldn't finish my Summer Lovin' story in time, so I'm turning it into a noir :p

Admittedly, I've never read any Mickey Spillane before seeing this contest. Just finished reading I, the Jury for prep but I feel like my story fails miserably as an 'ode'.

I love the aesthetics of the hardboiled noir genre, but guess I get too much into my own way

With any luck, I'll find a beta reader to help me make it something worth adding to the anthology before the deadline!

Why do people 1-bomb an event story? Hell, it's not a contest. There are no prizes. It's not like there is a checkered flag at the end and a winner is declared.

I believe I was hit with at least two and maybe three 1-bombs today. Grrr. Aggravating shit. Unfortunately, sometimes the web brings out the worst in people.

Yep, I got hit by at least one maybe two one-bombs in the first ten votes. Their effect is slowly diminishing as the vote count increases and will rejig on the next sweep. C'est la vie.

Sorry, dog, for the bomb, it wasn't me but I feel your pain. I have no idea why some people vote a story down that most people love, except that they like to whack down the tall poppies, and you my friend are tall target for them.

Just by the by, I voted a five on your story.

This was as close to a Spillane story as I could remember. I gave it a five and left a comment. RT

Saw that, RoperT, thanks.

"Kinda flattering," said Dan, "'cause my author ain't read no Mickey Spillane."

I read this line on Page 1 and said Holy Shit, she's got it down:

"Kittie," she offered. "My name's Kittie." She glanced down at herself, and ran her finger along the top of a name badge, nicely angled on her left breast. Or perhaps it was the curve of her breast that was nice, and the badge went along for the ride.

I read your story, and in my mind's-eye and ears, Mike Hammer(Stacy Keach) was narrating.
p.s. I love waitresses/servers who wear those name badges, so I'm sure that's a tradition about to disappear.

Your work was good, Mickey Spillane style as an aside, I'm reading him for the first time. I chose The Big Kill to start getting hammered on.

I was always partial to I, The Jury for a first-timer.

Well, I already had this one. It was I took when I moved away from home, but I never got around to reading it.

Oh, I just got the following from a reader of my story in the event.

very good story, much pleasure to read. Arigatōgozaimashita

So not understanding, a. what language, b. what the last word meant, I sent the comment to my dad. He said it was probably from Japan and it means thank you and is lacking any superlatives to the thank you, as in it isn't the more formal thank you very much, Dōmo arigatōgozaimasu. The things I don't know. I told him I didn't know you knew Japanese. He said he didn't but he knew a few helpful phrases. Most he learned to impress a girl from Japan in his youth.

Illegal tags

I learned, awkwardly, that LE has an Index Prohibitorum for tags.

If one of your tags is 'murder' (as it was for my Hammered offering) your submission won't go through. It is a fine word in the short description (presumably also in the title, but I don't know.) Anyone still submitting might want to be aware of this.

Wonder what the other non-kosher tag-words are?

As a guess, anything with "little" in it, plus some have mentioned vore, snuff; stuff like that.

“Murder” has worked for me in story titles. As to disallowed words, I’m not sure, but I would imagine any words to do with violent crime or underage sex are verboten.

The event list is up.

Congratulations to all who completed their stories! I'm looking forward to sampling them. And many thanks to ChloeTzang for organizing this.

I stated early in this thread that I planned to participate and I made a lot of progress, but as I neared the halfway point in my story, I ran into too many roadblocks and time was running out so it had to go on hold. I hope to finish it eventually, maybe for a "Hammered, Too!" event?

Stats

Thanks to Chloe Tzang for initiating this and all who have contributed.

Interesting offerings, a much more difficult challenge than it seemed, here is the breakdown:

19 Stories (one three-part series, another a chapter-2 in a series)
17 Authors

In these categories:

7 in Novels
5 Loving Wives
3 Erotic Couplings
3 Non-erotic
1 Romance

304.55k words all told (although there is one brave 750 word entry.) Not going to be an easy cruise through the list...
