Americans expressed the least amount of trust in news media of all the markets surveyed in the recent Digital News Report 2021 from Oxford University's Reuters Institute research center released Wednesday.

The Reuters Institute commissioned a YouGov survey of over people 90,000 in 46 media markets on six continents to produce the report......

The wacky Trumpettes posting to this thread explain the problem with trust in the news. Their Trump-led campaign of lying about everything is working. Of course they are proud of their mischief and malevolence. They are domestic terrorists.

Try again buckwheat.

Libs have controlled the media since before the best part of you ran down the side of your mama's leg.

Here's a better source (so we don't get too derailed by NewsMax). Gallup has a long term trend analysis.

Just as a side-note (as you run around and stab each other in the eye), it rather neatly correlates with the expansion and reach of the internet. A prevailing hypothesis among folks who study such things is that the rise of internet and it's reach correlates nicely with the drop in trust of the "media". The democratization and subsequent balkanization of how individuals consume media and where they consume it from has led to the information bubble effect many people live in.

This is exactly why I get so sick of this board... this is literally like Ke$hia telling Beyonce that she is a terrible vocalist. And I noticed you posted under three different user names on this same thread. That must be some kind of record... Seriously, are you really that frickin' bored?? Go away, Vetteman!!

The part of the thread title we should be paying attention to is "in the World." What is it about media outlets in foreign countries, that the people trust them more?

Trump assailed the media because he wanted the steeple who follow him to believe him instead of the facts. That way he and the right wing could spread less and conspiracy theories at will.

That doesn't seem like an adequate explanation -- it only applies to one administration. Were the American media any more trusted in 2015 than now?

The media "went under water" (below 50%) starting in 2004.

In addition to the scope of news media (the sheer number of outlets) and the downward economic pressure that has negatively impacts operations, there has also been an increase in two avenues that have impacted perception of the media.

First is the rise of "fact checking" media - that is the internal operations of some media outlets that "fact check" rival outlets and readily expose their flaws and foibles and the external organizations (that can be partisan driven). This means when media makes a mistake it is trumpeted across media, leading to the "you can't trust them" mentality that has arisen.

Additionally, the increased sophistication of the consumer, who now possesses the ability to "validate the source" leads to people seeing with their own eyes instances where the media is incorrect, incorrectly framing issues, or deceptively presenting issues.

Generally speaking, there is no problem with partisan media - as long as they are transparent. Unfortunately, many of them aren't. Fortunately, they have competitors that are quite willing to point out both the lack of transparency and examples of that lack.

Now - media bias always existed, sometimes explicit, more often than not implicit. They just weren't subjected to either the constant magnifier glasses of the watchers and the abilities of the watchers to broadcast their findings to a wide audience.
