I’m a massive dork and listen to a lot of NPR. This weekend, they had a story about an art installation where people could write what they lost and gained in 2020. I thought it was moving, funny, and unifying.

Litsters have had such varied experiences experiences over the last 10 months, I figured it might be an interesting question to throw out there for you all.

So....
What did you lose in 2020?
What did you gain in 2020?

Bonus:
Did 2020 cause you to take a look at anything and cause you make a profound change anywhere in your life?

I lost my brother.🕯
I lost trust in some people.
I lost respect for some people.

I gained a grandson. 💙
I gained genuine spiritual relationships. 🧿🕯

It caused me to let go of people and things that weren't for me.

Congrats on the new grandchild, and I’m sorry for your loss

Such a good idea for a thread, I’ll give this a go for now

In 2020

I lost
My privacy
The travel part of my job
My sanity at various points
My freedom
Lots of sleep
Holidays
A social life
Some of my shyness that had made me body conscious
Touch with my work colleagues

I gained
Some fitness due to all of the walks
Weight (just a little in the wrong places)
A very good and special friend from lit
Some new found confidence in myself
Knowledge
Time at home with my family
New work skills

And in answer to the bonus: I had become very lazy so sine May I decided I needed more exercise and have taken to walking 5-6 miles daily in all weather and that includes the heavy snow we had here a few weeks before Christmas (I’m sure there’s a picture of me around somewhere on Lit with snow all over my jacket & hat) I’ve decided in 2021 that I’m going to start to turn some of those walks into runs, something I’ve never done in the 50 years of my life so far..... wish me luck!

I lost my job
I lost some friends
I lost 2 dogs

I gained much needed time with my daughter
I gained rest
I gained renewed friendships
I gained new friends

This year taught me to be vigilant with my health both mental and physical...I truly learned that I can’t pour from an empty cup.

Found time with my dog, who is quickly getting too old.
Found I can cook every meal, every day, for everybody for a stretch of time, even if I don’t want to.
Found that being a child of older parents during a pandemic means you’re parenting them.
Found new ways to volunteer and help in my community.
Found a few extra pounds but also the elusive free weight to use at home.
Found so much more respect for our school and how I will sacrifice to keep my kid there.
Found joy in ten minutes alone. Luckily I’m a quick masturbator!
Found a lot of new restaurants to support via takeout.
Found out I’m a support system for friends. Not a role I wanted, but it feels good to be reliable and helpful to people struggling with mental health issues.
Found out how fantastic many of my neighbors are.

Lost a white supremacist dictator.
Lost respect for many local business owners that violate the governors orders or blame him for their woes.
Lost ‘me time’.
Lost time with Alpine.
Lost some of my marbles.

I lost my Mojo. Although an argument could be made that it was lost 20 years ago or that I never had it or whatever the fuck.

I found some dumb threads here.

In 2020, I lost...
...a 3mm mass out of my uterus.
...alone time.
...my mind.
...
In 2020, I gained...
...a new appreciation for the resiliency of children in the face of a world changing event.
...a greater love and respect for my support group.

2020 was an interesting year:

I found my birth-father through DNA and some sleuthing by my daughter. I lost my birth-father to cancer after meeting him twice early in the year. I 'found' a new Granddaughter who is a sweet beautiful little thing.

I lost 20 pounds and found 5 of them back over the holidays.

I 'found' Facebook and signed up for the first time. As a result, I lost some respect for some people who I thought I knew.

I lost interest in one extra-curricular activity and found passion and success in another.

I am looking forward to 2021 :cattail:

I gained DIY skills

Will think more deeply over this soon
