The Best Story You Never Wrote

What's the best idea for a story you've had but never got up the momentum to finish?

I have two regrettably unfinished tales:

A teacher student story where a young man discovers the teacher he has a crush on is a masochist and saves her from a S&M revenge porn situation ~ I couldn't describe how it feels to be aroused by pain and torment, just not my kink.

Another is a male on male story, a girl discovers her father and boyfriend are both bisexual when she catches them buttfucking and then there are some threesome shenanigans ~ I found I couldn't really get inside the heads of the men and what they feel for each other. Who knows how guys really think?

The problem is I really like the characters I imagine and they feel almost real to me, leaving them in this incomplete limbo sometimes weighs on my mind. Silly, isn't it?

No regrets, because a part of me thinks that most of them will be made into a story someday. It just needs the right time and the right idea to give it a boost.

I’ve got about thirty percent of it drafted but it needs a major effort to finish the draft, rewrite and edit.

“Boys Over Flowers.” Another romantic tear jerker about an Asian American girl and a white guy. Her parents and his break up the relationship, forbid her seeing him and send her away .... but he finds her and true love blossoms anew.... it’s far better than it sounds.....

I wouldn't even know where to begin. I have a list of at least 30 stories for which I've either prepared a short written description of the idea or for which I've written a fair amount but not finished. I have no idea which would be best. Probably the three that rank highest on my list would be an Inhuman story about an incubus seeking atonement for his actions, a BDSM/rope play-Valentine's story, and a Mature story about a 27 year old man and 54 year old woman. I've partly outlined and written all three but still have a lot of work to do on all of them.

It isn't silly. Maybe it's just tough to write in a category that you don't feel comfortable in. Perhaps the first one could have the same characters and be repurposed somehow? Maybe she should just be moonlighting in regular porn - but why would he still need to save her? Did he see her in a video clip and he finds out where those are being made? (Difficult but not impossible.) When he goes to "save" her he realizes how delusional he's been.

Could the second one have the father with his girlfriend instead of a boyfriend? There still could be threesomes.

(Joking. I actually did have a vague outline and there would be no tentacle space monsters, although I did once write a humorous tentacle sex story from the standpoint of a kind, loving, happily married tentacle monster professor who gets accused of sexual misconduct by one of his students.)

Anne Bonne was an Irish emigree to the Carolinas. Traveling to the Indies she met Calico Jack Rackham and became a trusted member of his crew, often being put in command of prizes. She and Mary Read another female member of Rackham's crew were his and each other's lovers. Captured by the Britiish in 1720 Calico Jack was hung. Read and Bonny had their executions stayed because ... wait for it ... both of them were pregnant. Read died in jail but Bonny escaped and was naer heard from again arrgh.

So what you’re say is my “I Married a Heptapod” would have been far more popular if I’d named it “I Married a Heptapod, with Tentacles.” I sort of thought that because it was a Heptapod, the assumption was that there were tentacles. Oh dear.

Now that would just be appealing to the lowest common denominator (i.e. people that can't work out what "heptapod" means), and surely your readers are more discerning than that.

I have reams of this

I have reams of notes, scribbled ideas, thoughts, specific quotes, etc etc, ad naseum for stories that have not yet been put on paper.

I'll get to all of them one day.

The one thing that DOES get me is that I have a 'novel' floating around in my head. It's not erotic but I think it'd make a fine story about a group of Americans who are in the transportation business, mostly weaponry, in Central America. A famous pop singer wants to make a song about the area to raise awareness of the problems and she wants to tour it from their helicopter.

Long story short, they get shot down over contested territory and one of the anti-government groups captures our main character, a former military smuggler and the pop star. He, smuggler, is forced to instruct their soldiers in the Marine Corps method of combat so they can fight the government and carve out their own empire. If he does not, pop star dies.

And what ensues is a double Scheherazade play where military guy does so well, he's rewarded, pop star performs to get in the good graces of the leaders, and they plot escape while getting tied in with the local population.

Maybe it'll happen one day. Probably not.
