I like the custom of the playing of the national anthem at the start of sporting events. I think it's a small but nice way of showing respect for our country. It gives a sense of unity I think even in the midst of competition. It doesn't represent an endorsement of everything that is going on and it doesn't imply that our country is perfect. I think it represents collective pride in our country, respect for those who came before us and sacrificed for our country, and gratitude for the chance to make things better. Some football teams stayed in their locker rooms for the playing of the National Anthem. They said it was a sign of unity. That didn't make sense because it certainly doesn't represent a sign of unity with the people who make their industry possible. And kneeling at the playing of your country's national anthem is probably the most hypocritical display of weakness I could think of. The coach of the Indianapolis Colts who is obscenely blessed as a result of being an American took a knee is a despicable sign of weakness. Self loathing is a horrible trait. Stand and fight to make your country better.
