This thread is to kick off a new challenge. Come here to ask questions, make suggestions, announce participation, or anything else pertinent to the challenge. If you have a question, I’ll answer if I can. But I don’t have all the answers. If I’m stumped (not an unusual occurrence), I may cry uncle and beg for help. Anyone else can respond in my stead to help someone at any time or if they just want to weigh in.

Laurel will create the post on the story side shortly.

A Song from My Story, a Story for My Song

Do you remember a special song from your first school dance? The song on the car radio when you finally got to first base? The music playing when you lost your virginity? A standout song from the playlist for your road trip to spring break with someone that made the trip memorable? The music playing when you first realized you were in love? The first song you danced to as husband and wife? Music often plays a central role in our lives and our most significant life events.

The challenge is to write an homage to music somehow important to you. Write a story inspired by a song, an album or CD, or any piece of music from your life. Perhaps it’s just a favorite tune that suggests a story idea. Music from an important or special moment. A song associated with an old friend you’ve not seen in years. Or even a tune that brings back a memory that makes you change the station the second you hear it. Odds are there’s music for it. Use it to to create something new and unique.

This is a challenge, not a contest. You may garner some fame, or maybe become infamous. But you won’t pad your bank account. Your story may, and probably will, get graded by some readers. But the stories won’t be ranked. There will be no challenge losers. The winners will be the readers that get to enjoy what you’ve created.

The rules:
1. This challenge is open to anyone that wishes to participate.
2. Stories can be submitted for any Literotica genre.
3. The song title can be used as the story title but doesn’t have to be.
4. Limit direct quotes to no more than 2-4 lines total.
5. Use proper punctuation for any direct quotes.
6. Copy and paste the text ‘A Story for Your Song’ in the Note to Admin field.
7. Submit your story between 12:01AM October 19, 2020 and 11:59PM November 1, 2020. The anthology will be posted November 9, 2020.

Ohhhhhh I like. Count me in.

I like to use old song titles that mean something or tell me a story, so I've got the following already in my story list:

'Rag Doll', which was directly inspired by Frankie Valli and The 4 Seasons record and the story it told
'Big Girls Don't Cry', again, a 4 Seasons hit
'Down At The Twist & Shout' from Mary Chapin Carpenter, because that Cajun feel worked for the story
'All I Ever Wanted' by Depeche Mode, because I like the song and thought it worked as a story title
'A Cure For The Birthday Blues' inspired by 'Happy Birthday Blues' by Kathy Young And The Innocents

I'm currently awaiting the edit of 'Sherry Baby' from BlackrandI1958, but it forms part of the 'Rag Doll/Nia ' story crossover sequence so strictly speaking I don't know if it fits in this challenge, probably not, but I'm intrigued by the challenge and if I had more time I'd probably jump at it, I have a part-written romance in the offing, 'End Of The World' inspired by the old Skeeter Davis song, but I'm too busy to give it the time it needs, so it's still just a stub.

I'm in, provided I finish my novel manuscript by then (which I should, as I'm pitching it at a conference in October!). No time to write anything for here until October, but I do have a good idea for this one.

Curious....is it okay to use the song title as the title of a story? Legally I mean?

My first series here Siblings with Benefits had the song Broken by Seether as one of its inspirations. The E-books are titled Broken...but that doesn't necessarily jump out as the song title as its just one word and a common one.

This is an interesting idea. If I come up with something that isn’t insanely personal I might participate.

Themed writing challenge idea

This is an interesting idea. If I come up with something that isn’t insanely personal I might participate.

There's no need to write anything personal. The challenge is to produce something inspired by music that is personally significant. The story doesn't have to be or reveal anything personal.

I was already working on a concept for a story based on the Bush song Machinehead, so I'm going to give it a go and try to get it done for this challenge.

I get this. Just that the first several ideas I got were insanely personal. The other problem I have is that most of the music that has influenced me the most is something almost nobody reading this site has never heard of, so it adds a strain on conveying the importance. But it’s a great idea and luckily there’s plenty of time, so definitely maybe.

What an exciting concept! I've already written The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, (well I didn't write the song, but the story!) and I'm sure I've got another one in me!

I’m in.

I love this. I’m going to participate. It will be my first time doing a challenge.

Hm. Count me in, cautiously. I might have an idea, but it needs some creative timing to pull it off.

I literally just wrote a story based on Escape (The Pina Colada Song) for the summer lovin contest. Damn you!

Oldies but goodies....

I've used some songs in some of my stories, too....
Like "Spill the Wine".... Can we resubmit or have them linked?
I do have at least one song in mind for the challenge, though....
Great idea!:rose:

I know, right?

Yeah, you were ahead of the curve, or just psychic.
But you can win $$$ for it in Summer Lovin', this is a challenge.
I like the other one, Amorous Goods, where it will be cross listed for the October monthly contest! But I don't know about you, I like the challenges and contests to get my lazy butt to writing! Good motivator!

Ps

All the songs I have used are long out of copyright except "We'll Gather Lilacs" by Ivor Novello I used for English Lane. He died in 1951 so copyright expiry from date of composition plus 70 years from composer's death = 2021. I used three lines of that only. I quote the whole of "Jeanie with the light brown hair" at the end of Jeanie The Genie but that was out of copyright at least 70years ago.

But now - blast! - I've got to write another one...

Maybe the Countess' aria from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro - a lament for lost love.

The posting for this challenge says that stories for this challenge can also be submitted for the Halloween contest.

I don't know if a story can be resubmitted or crosslinked. That's a question Laurel.

Usually, it has to be a new story. I don't expect any of those I have already posted to be considered. I am writing one based on the Aria Dove Sono from Mozart's Marriage of Figaro.

I have several stories that are themed around music that have ratings above 4.90. It wouldn't be fair to cherry pick them for a contest, would it?
