The A Song from My Story, a Story for My Song Support Page

Best I could find on short notice:

Not a very practical shape, but gets to the point (scroll down for better image) ;).

*face-palm* How did I know it would be you who'd link something like this? (And to think, I actually missed this for a couple days!) Here's the thing about that, Mister EBs... it's pretty; big, hard, flashy and needless to say, expensive. But that only proves one thing (something I've stated all along): there's no suitable substitute for the real thing. ;)

Multi-faceted, me :).

I'm not entering the event, but it's made me think so I'll spew here.

I have a novel that I started a couple years before I came to Lit, and in a brief lag I started posting some of the early chapters. I thought I could end it at a minor break, but that didn't work. The wails and sounds of rending garments made me post more of it.

The story was about a classical pianist and her brother, and the music was a big part -- starting the Fur Elise and Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, and moving on to other classical pieces. I took the whole story off Lit once I revealed its major secret, because the rest of the story would be non-erotic.

I haven't written it, but in the lead-up to the climax, the pianist plays a concert in a politically-loaded environment. She comes out to play her encore and instead of playing a classical piece, she plays "This Land is Your Land," and everyone understands what she's saying.

She incited a riot. In the chaos that followed, her boyfriend was murdered and she was kidnapped. Her brother was arrested as a rioter and held until his friends broke him out, and that set up the climax of the story.

I haven't written anything else where music was integral to the story.

I started a story when the event was announced, and yesterday I wrote the last section. But I'm no longer sure it fits the theme; it moved away from the title. I'll re-read it and see what to do with it.

My interpretation of the brief, to use music and song to create something new and unique, is quite broad, so I think it’s fair to say if your story is even vaguely associated with or inspired by a piece of music, it’s relevant for the challenge.

Response to A Song for My Story . . .

I've been following the posts but haven't felt the need to post anything. There were lots of folks who had better answers than I did and had beat to a response anyway.

I'm pleased to see there was some enthusiasm for the concept. I have a story ready to post and may have another done in time. I look forward to see what resulted.

I had plans to make a contribution to this event, but I'm not going to get to it. It's ironic considering how much use I've made of songs in my other work.

Hoping to finish mine this week. It's coming, slowly.

Joy of joys with it not being a competition, and posting in a less popular category, but so far, the 1 bombers aren't out (touch wood!)

I have just hit submit on my story based on Mozart's aria Dove Sono.

Organizer's submission

I posted my story 'Night Music in the Park' I was laboring over another story intended to be posted for both Amorous Goods and the Halloween Contest. I eventually became concerned that I might not participate in the challenge I organized.

When I decided to drop that one for a while, I found my muse again and managed to finish this one. Which isn't to say I didn't fret about how 'Night Music in the Park' would turn out.

I hope those who participate, and any others that opt to read it, find it worth their time. I look forward to reading the other contributions to the concept when the list gets posted.

When reading through the posts to this thread, I saw a number of writers use music as a motivating theme in the submissions. I had never noticed that among the stories I have read. I might not have suggested it otherwise. But in the end, it was pleasing to see some enthusiasm for the concept.

Just submitted mine. I have an idea for another one, but I'm not sure if I feel up to cranking it out just yet.

Hmm. Laurel put the tag in for me. I think she was happy to have a reason to replace the original keyword 'Circumcision '...
Circumcision is creative! I have no excuse because by the tag-stage I filled it with generic terms when one was already supplied for me. And I think this is the fourth event/challenge I’ve entered, so I should’ve known better.

I wonder if authors could provide links to the songs that inspired them to write their story.

Sure!

The title and theme from "Sally Cinnamon" come from the song "Sally Cinnamon" by the Stone Roses - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYsQcIMPOnQ

I drew upon a couple of other songs as well, which are mentioned in the story.

"I'm Falling" by the Comsat Angels - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bO_XNeyGdE , which people might know from the movie Real Genius.

"Waterfall" by the Stone Roses - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NrLBlw9WZE

"Alex Chilton" by the Replacements - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTSJYZyouek
