How do you feel about perception, here or Lit? Does it matter?

Perception from strangers who don't know anything about me matters zero.

Have you ever tried to correct a mis-perception? (I'm no sure that's a word but we're going with it!)

Not at all. I find it rather amusing and fun to play with because most of the time is wrong.

How aware are you of how people perceive you?

I think I have a pretty good idea. But then again I might be wrong, just like them.

When someone new shows up on Lit, do you automatically think that they are an alt? What needs to happen to change your mind?

I don't care about that either. It changes nothing to me. An "alt" a "real", we're all behind a computer.

I've been thinking a lot about perception lately and how important it is to me and how important it should be.

It's nice to be perceived as approachable, likable, engaging, entertaining, but I don't live and die by how I'm perceived on Lit. I've never tried to correct a misperception, but I have apologized for a comment or two here and there. Not to improve my image, but to take responsibility for poor judgement. I honestly am uncertain how I am perceived here, but I assume most (some?) think I'm ok. Again, it's not something I dwell on.

I'm always cautious of new posters and even more so when they're too polished in their Lit posts for their post count. So I observe them for a while to see what develops. It's all about the context and interactions with others here in the end.

I generally don't care. If I figure out it's an alt of someone I had ignored, I'll ignore the alt too. Otherwise, it doesn't matter to me as much as it does to some.

Fuck, I went through three lurking-screennames in a year. Who am I to be picky or to bitch?

Good point. It's the behaviour you're ignoring, not the name. Assuming the behaviour has changed should be no problem.

As to me - I'm not that suspicious. I've probably spoken to alts, but never suffered from one, and I doubt they're interested in me anyway.

I'm bad at spotting alts unless they come out and say it or someone points it out to me. I usually will ask if they're an alt if they're new and end up in my inbox, though.

That said, I'm cautious of new posters in general. Only because they often don't stick around for long, so I don't want to get to know someone who's going to disappear.

I’m curious, not to derail the thread, but why do people have alts? Is it for a fresh start or so they can take on a different persona? I guess I just don’t understand the reasoning...Wouldn’t it be better to just be who you are?

I think there are as many reasons as there are people. I had another screenname once. I stopped using it when I had a stalker who threatened me in person. Some people need a fresh start, or deleted their account and want to come back. Others reasons seem more nefarious.

Maybe I should try an alt, I wonder if my interactions would be the same or different...but I won’t, too much work to get the post count up LOL

I think I have pretty excellent alt radar. Where and how someone new posts says a lot.

Mainly, I dont care I'd someone makes a new account and I dont really think that automatically makes someone an alt. A restart or refresh - I get it. But someone pretending to be someone new to try something malicious, get information, or avoid drama they started with a group of fan girls is different.

I keep an eye on new people but I am hesitant. Mostly for what Indie said - are they going to stick around? But also, is this a cool person with whom I will have anything in common?

makes sense

unfortunately that is our society
because there are creeps out there
normal guys find it difficult to meet new people

because there are cyber thieves out there we all have to be cautious
with information. when i finally decided to become a member i still
used a non de script user name and offered very little in my profile.
not trusting the security of the site.
never thinking women would look at that and be even more mistrusting.

i don't expect the world to change anytime soon

I've had a couple over the years . . . mostly just to play games, nothing nefarious. Just good clean, or dirty, fun. Once in a while they might still come out to play.

Didn’t you get frustrated that no one was calling you out, and out yourself?

Good lord no. The Fantastic Four (Trekka, Suz, AGG & Endless Night) called him out about 30 posts in. Poor Frenchie didn't last 24 hours! He showed up last night to run a beta test on a link for me, though. He’s cool like that.

I dont really interact with newbs. I will watch what, and more importantly where they post.

I usually sniff out an ALT when they just joined two days ago and pull up threads 8 years old to post on...

Some of our finest work. :D

It'a getting warm here! What's your favorite flavor ice cream?

Vanilla. Hands down. The cheap shit. No fancy French vanilla bean. Why? Because it is the topping that makes the ice cream...and oh so many possibilities there are...and who can top adding Hershey's chocolate syrup to it and mushing it into a super thick "shake"?

Now, if it "must" be a flavored kind...sea salt caramel with pecans...on a waffle cone
