But you'd probably, as people have said, see a huge reduction in engagement. And I'm always wary of price-hiking. I wouldn't support it.

I wouldn’t be weary of a small fee as a way to verify identify and get rid of alts.

What about a Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" type fee. By that I mean, every month a random PM is sent out to a Lit member and they have to post a sexy pic of themselves (sexy would be defined by them and totally accepted by everyone)?
Just my way of making the place potentially more perverted and the cost is creativity. Plus we all get to see some hot flesh!

If a person explains themselves well enough, then yes, I'd totally be able to see their point of view whilst still disagreeing with it (and likewise I hope I explain myself well enough that people understand me).

i consider it a valuable skill to listen to and try to understand and appreciate opposing opinions. we’re in dire need of more such behavior these days. just because you don’t agree with me doesn’t make you my enemy. i’d rather find viewpoints on which we do agree and build from there. i think that’s how progress is achieved.

I’m at an age where I have come full circle on an awful lot of things so I can say I think I’m pretty good at it. Why? I was probably ‘there’ myself. Or in a spot somewhere close to or related to their opinion. Or I’ve argued their point already. I’ll try to join them for a minute in their opinion and break away when I get to the fork in the road and tell them why. I’ve spent my entire adult life having my work performance evaluated on a near daily basis (and my compensation depend on this) so I have to be ready to self evaluate and try to anticipate the other side.
Passion and heat about your point of view doesn’t negate it, but it can cause others to be less inclined to listen. I wasn’t as good at controlling this when I was younger. When I yell, I prefer to yell at the moon or, worst case, myself. I also try to make an active effort to be direct, because in directness you are honoring another’s words and opinions. Beating around the bush (easy there...) never works.
I’ve been told recently that I read too much into things
I don’t think so, but I’m going to sit back and think about it for awhile

Unfortunately, far too good. It's my biggest strength and biggest weakness. I can put myself in someone else's shoes far more than I like, most of the time, because it makes me indecisive.
The only exception is when the other point of view is based on false information or data...then I dig my heels in and become a fucking mule.

I used to try much harder, as relationship building was part of it by default. But now? I don't try at all. I feel a world apart from anyone that could believe what most of the other side believes, and I am actually good at playing devil's advocate. To me, an entire political party is run by traitors and if you can support those traitors, you are one too. Silence is consent on some of these issues. i've ended friendships over these differences because it's a moral failure to me to not speak up about what's going on.
Differences in pop culture taste is a different story. I just don't see how people can be wrong about that
