I’m working on a story about a married couple, each person around 70 years old. They’re still in love, and neither has ever strayed. He was quite the stallion in his youth, and while her sex drive wasn’t as high as his originally, she caught up through ‘post-menopausal zest,’ which some women experience (and usually don’t advertise to their friends, who go through the more common post-menopausal effects of ‘personal dryness’ and reduced libido). After about 20 years of wild (and vanilla) sex in their empty nest, the husband starts to feel the effects of his age, and while he thinks he could have accepted an end to full genital sex, he resists it because his wife is still having so much fun.
I have a few directions I’m considering (all of them branching from the fact that he’s medicated against hypertension, and she insists that she prefers a live soulmate to a satyr at death’s door, so he has to stay on his meds and not resort to boner pills). One approach is for the wife to find ways to spice things up, still with just the two of them alone. She was never a prude, with her values informed by women’s liberation and sexual ‘freedom’ in the 1970s, but in the early years of the marriage they decided that various things they tried didn’t work for one, the other, or both, so they settled in to what they both liked, genital-genital with oral foreplay. Now she does research and expands their repertoire, and the husband becomes erectilely functional enough for them to get their jollies (genital-genital, rather than only oral to orgasm)--giving her space to claim later (truthfully or otherwise) that her libido has started to ramp down.
This might go in Mature, which from what I’ve seen can include stories with all participants Of A Certain Age, and not just May-December. Romance is also a possible fit, because the wife’s motivation is more love than desire. But it seems to me that this would be within the literal definition of Loving Wives. Maybe the readers there who intensely dislike a wife’s adultery going unpunished (is that a sufficiently non-judgmental description?) might approve of a sexually active wife devoting herself to helping her husband catch up.
Anyway, I welcome any guidance from those of you who have often taken the risk of posting in LW.
