Hello all, Ken here.

I have posted on here before and have enjoyed the results. I've meet some talented Writers/Authors and have really enjoyed all they created for me. Well, looking for more if anyone is interested. I had an old post on this same Board but it's about 2 years old so Ignore it. No, I don't know how to delete it lol. Oh and to clear it up I'm asking about a Shape Shifter that changes from person to person, not like a Werewolf or anything ;D If anyone is Interested feel free to PM me on here. Thanks for reading and have a good one!

You know Ken, I have to be honest and say that these days - in this um 'political/social' climate, things are so fraught with ulterior motives (I'm not saying you) that it's not as simple as your succinct wording should let it be:

trans-humans can 'shape shift' in a way but that is TOTALLY different of a story type to say, what is in something like Homer where one or other of the gods turns up and the humans don't 'make them out' for who they really are. And both of those story-lines are different to say Virginia Woolf's 'Orlando' in which the main character lives a series of succeeding and different 'mortal duration' lives as both a male and a female and so on but remembers all their lives and who they actually are all the time, with a complete intact memory of everything and how other humans behaved in the history they witnessed.

So. Where do you want to take the base story-line of 'shape shifting?' Can you expand a little on what you want to read?

The only shape-shifters I'm interested in are selkies, were-seals, but they smell bad.

Yeah, I agree with the Aussie bloke, Desiremakesmeweak. You gotta give us more to go on.

See this all the time here. People come on and say they want help with something, but don't give us a whole lot to work with. Some people even make posts asking for help, but say they don't want to reveal too much of their idea because, I guess, it's so goddamn good one of us motherfuckers might steal it.

I promise you that is highly unlikely to happen.

(Tongue-in-cheek here; warning)

Mystique's got blue fucking skin, dude! For Chrissakes.

I know some of the aliens LOOK blue skinned but that's only because their little tiny skin hairs produce a bluish tinge in some kinds of mild diffused light.

Darker blue freckles on blue skin... Nah nah nah.

You want sci-fi shape shifting. M'kay.

'Sci-Fi...' So... That's advanced technology, and maybe a little into the future or someone from a more advanced society...

You mean, like... KP?

That's the real deal right there as it is.

Also, are there selkie walruses?

"Hi, my name is Bob. I am a walrus."

"Fuck off, Beatleboy."

My exposure to Shapeshifters is limited to Odo, who unfortunately had to spend a certain amount of time in a bucket to rest and recuperate from the tedious task of appearing human.

As a shapeshifter or other creature who could effortlessly replicate the appearance and mannerisms of anyone or anything at will without the need for a bucket, what happens when you come face to face with your original?

Perhaps an energy based entity that could inhabit any being at will and easily move from one to another. Yes, that's been done in SciFi too but wouldn't it be fun to explore here and make certain public figures do things they probably never would?

Comic nerd that I am, I would point out that the Martian Manhunter from the DC Comics universe (as well as all the white Martians) were consummate shapeshifters.

Then there was the one where Plastic Man turned himself into a dress and one of the superheroines put him on...

Do they smell worse when they are humans or when they are seals?
Male selkies are apparently appealing to SOME human females. The selkie in the song is ugly but she's Scottish and presumably desperate, so there you have it. Maybe he's better than haggis.

Thank you.:)

But I am seriously concerned. If a selkie asks me out, and I like him but he smells bad, is it going to get better or worse when he changes over?

Seann Maguire has a good take on selkies in her October Daye stories. Apparently they smell ok either way :)

At least he wasn't so pervy as to become a girls' bicycle seat.

As to the merits of the post, Native American mythology has skinwalkers .
That's Navaho lore. The Wikipedia entry on Shapeshifting lists many examples in many cultures. I vaguely recall an analysis showing that shapeshifting and witchcraft lore correlate with competitive societies lacking formal ways to resolve disputes. When things go bad, blame witches, demons, were-critters, etc. The Navahos sure had their enemies.

As far as relatively modern sci-fi movies goes, the Tom Cruise movie 'Oblivion' seems to have so many of the OP's desired elements and yet, for me (I haven't watched the whole entire movie all the way through) it has those same old banal dystopian 'messaging' points that far too many recent era movies have.

I think originally the dystopian futurism or 'futuristic envisioning that was dystopian' set out to inspire people to thinking about possible pathways to overcome problems OUT of the dystopia - now it seems it's just an excuse to crash stuff and explode things in CGI and create more depressing misery in the human mindset.

Erotic shape-shifting is difficult to, sort of 'explain' in a philosophically realistic sense (LOL, at least it is to me and that's the kind of thing I would need to be able to do if only in my own head before I could write a story around the theme...).

A lot of critics despised Roger Vadim's 'Night Games' which did have erotic shape-shifting - arguably, it did have that - but I really loved it for key scenes which are stand-outs in all of movie history, for me.

Shape shifting is a magical thing, and if it is portrayed as high tech and scientifically enabled, then it is already straight into that category where advanced science looks like magic to less-advanced mindsets.

One of the most utterly amazing and yet rarely spoken about futuristic sci-fi 'shape shifting' accounts is in the classical 'orthodox' Islamic literature I think including the Koran itself in some of the verses there: apparently, according to the hadiths, in the future, those people selected by God to enter the 'Eternal Abodes' will be able to go to what seems for all intents and purposes when you read the descriptions, like some kind of 'Sex Expo' hall, where you go into these high tech booths, and peruse photos of people, and then select who you want to fuck, and then they just appear and you do what you will. I can't recall now whether these 'people' are real people or automatons or whatever... But...

I kid you not.

I happen to think 'Islam' is the work of Satan, but he gives away too many secrets in it if you examine all of the writings properly... ...I think some of the more mind-boggling aspects and 'theoretically' ridiculous things, are in fact true after a fashion. Which is why I read the material at all. The main text is deeply self-contradictory and underhandedly twisted and malicious. However, that doesn't mean to say I don't read the stuff 'with a long handled steam-punker magnifying glass.' (And no, I am not Ralfy the Whiskey Expert).

...And yeah, I am a kind of an occultist. How can you not be if you follow in the tracks of HPL and Wheatley and so on.

Li'l Tommy Turdball's a cult member and I have no interest in anything he says or does.

A few SciFi writers with some tech chops have written of a future (not too far off) when medical advances will allow humans to morph into any face, gender, race, or species desired. Ya wanna be an eagle? Poof, you're an eagle! Or a blue TG centaur. We also have prospects of extended lifetimes, effective immortality. When science delivers what religions can only offer, where goest faith?

If we get immortality, we'll need interstellar travel, so we can put-em all somewhere. If we have universal shape-shifting... I'll bet IDs will be tricky.
