Do you think businesses should be allowed to pay tipped workers a sub-minimum wage?

In Washington DC, tipped employees currently earn $3.33 an hour compared to the standard minimum wage of $12.50. But if a worker fails to reach $12.50 per hour with their base wage plus tips, the employer is required to make up the difference.

So should this change?

Seven states have already eliminated "tipping minimum wage" rates, and...D.C. Just Voted To End The Tipped Minimum Wage, But The Battle Isn’t Over

Well-tipped workers might not like having to declare said tips.

I've always been split on this. On the one hand a decent waiter makes far more than minimum wage with tips but a noob of course usually doesn't and is lucky to make enough to feed themselves. And add in that staff is notorious for hogging certain shifts and tables and you do have an unfair system.
On the other hand, fuck 'em.

Great plan- for smart wait staff. Under report your tips and still get the min. wage bump.

It would probably be best to let tipping be optional and pay everyone a living wage. But then... I live near Seattle and you know how screwed up people are in Seattle.

The Donald steals his wait staffs' tips. You can too.

I am for let it ride. If you cant handle your job don't apply. There are already enough people in customer service who are just there to collect a pay check and act put out.

I for one tip accordingly. I worked in food service in all aspects and was good at my job so I expect to get what I pay for.

Gum chewing, cell phones, cleanliness, inattentiveness I can not handle in today's world and would not fly with me.
