Why are maternal mortality rates in America so high?

Fake news?

Plus bad reporting in the past, says Scientific American:

So what exactly is it about being in a family way that is getting worse in America? According to some experts at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), perhaps nothing. A deeper dive into the mortality data and the conditions under which they were collected suggests that the apparent doubling may not necessarily mean that more mothers are dying than ever before. Instead, administrative issues in the past may have camouflaged a problem that is only now coming to light.

At 21 per 100,000 the US rate still looks bad. In the UK we are concerned about 12 per 100,000.

Because we are not an analog to your gene pool and we heavilly subsidize obesity.

That would not impact on the way mortality data was worked out. 6 out of 12 is the same as 12 out of 24.

You missed the part about the fertility of populations with higher mortality rates and unique health challenges. We subsidize the growth of our impoverished class. Poverty, poor nutrition, drug and alcohol abuse, and resistance to prenatal care are not conducive to good statistics.

Or America just likes to see mothers die. Because racist.

unplanned pregnancies
use of tobacco and drugs during pregnancy
lack of access to prenatal medical care
pollution
disease
SIDS

True, except " lack of access to prenatal medical care." That is universally available. It was available pre-obamacare; even more so now. Women who don't avail themselves of that generally don't because of drug and alcohol abuse and they don't want to be lectured about that.

- well unless of course you're middle-class don't have the money for the doubled in price Obamacare premiums and don't have the money for the doctor's visits because you're paying the Obamacare mandate penalty. Nobody actually cares about the mortality rate of the middle class- bunch of evil working people.

Because we have horrible health care, even though we pay 2-3 times what the rest of the 1st world does for it, we also have systemic racism.

Those both play key roles in the reasons why we are seeing 3rd world infant mortality rates in a 1st world country.

No, we have better obstetrics than any place on the planet.

What's your charge with "systemic racism," as it relates to Healthcare in this country? Be specific. Provide citations.

Having searched around at the data, scarey news: American doesn't know why. They haven't even put together an accurate system of recording maternal deaths vs causes

"a 2015 report from the World Health Organization (WHO) pointed out that the U.S. has a higher maternal mortality rate than Iran, Libya and Turkey. The WHO determined that half of the U.S. deaths were preventable."

Do you have to pay for prenatal care in the US? (In some form, even if it's via insurance?)

Yes. Either thru premiums or cash out of pocket. One way or another you are going to pay.

Or you won't pay. Money does not grow on trees. It is much more important to build walls and military than take care of our citizens.

Well, I think that's your answer then.

(And yes, I know taxation is just another form of payment, but it's of a significantly different order.)

The stats on people in the US who just die fullstop, regardless of their child-bearing status, because they don't have health insurance are pretty alarming. I'm assuming maternal death is a subset of that.

For those who can afford it. The rest of us are fucked.

That more black women die than white women during child birth. By a large percentage, as evidenced in the OP. Please refer to the BBC video that was linked.

I wonder how many of those deaths are legal citizens vs illegal citizens?

The very goal of socialism is to bring capitalist exceptionalism down to socialim's faux proletarian level. After a hundred legislatively applied years in now-almost completely statist America, socialism's success cannot be denied.
