An exemplary soldier...

My wife's researches into (someone else's) family history have found an interesting character who was a sibling of an ancestor.

He enlisted in a local regiment as a special reservist (part time volunteer) in 1908. In 1911 he was called up for a couple of weeks of refresher training. During those two weeks he was fined 9 days pay for 'drunkeness on duty and persistent insolence'.

In 1914 he was called up full time as World War One had started. Before leaving for France he was fined for drunkeness and insubordination. Within 3 months of his arrival in France for the Western Front, he had been courtmartialled twice.

The first court martial was for drunkeness in action and insubordination to his Sergeant and the Second Lieutenant in charge of his unit. He was sent to Military Prison in France for a month. While he was in prison his regiment lost a quarter of their strength by death and injury.

Two months later he was court martialled again. This time he was found guilty of drunkeness in action, insubordination and assaulting his Commanding Officer (not his line officer but the Colonel of the Regiment!). He was sent back to Military Prison for six months. While there his record as a prisoner was appalling. The prison authorities extended his sentence by two months for assaulting his guards (several times) and damage to the prison.

He was released back to his regiment. By that time more than half the regiment who had gone to France with him in Autumn 1914 were dead or injured.

He was due to be court martialled again - drunkeness, insolence, insubordination etc - when he was killed leading a counter attack against German troops that had entered the British trenches. Unsurprisingly he was still just a private but he had rallied his comrades and led a charge along the trench throwing hand grenades and personally bayonetting six Germans.

He might have been recommended for a posthumous medal but one look at his service record was enough to convince the authorities that that might not be popular with his fellow soldiers. His fellow soldiers regarded him as an unpleasant asshole who was a liability beside them.

The regiment was relieved that he was no longer their bad apple.

A fellow soldier's private diary recorded:

"He only did it (the counter attack) because the Germans had overrun the Rum store."

Having just come here recently but having been at other sites for years I can tell you the grass isn't always greener. There will be trolls, asses, and some nice people at all of them. Here (notwithstanding the LW crowd) the readers seem pretty open to different kinds of stories though incest rules at them all.

You seem to be a genial fellow so I wouldn't want to see you leave. By all means post your stories at other places if you hope to find new readers but maintain a presence here.

No no no no nooooooo! Years ago when I decided on Literotica, I looked at other sites, Lit has the best practises. Yes Literotica has flaws, but it does have evolving consultative checks and balances in place. All the others sites are havens for mindless crap and iligaility!

There aren't any better ones. I did a lot of looking around before I settled on Lit. Most of the others have either low reader numbers or They're like asstr and take anything and they're bare bones. Wattpad is good but they won't take our type of stories.

We love you Og, please stay. Just ignore the assholes and the site issues. However annoying they ars they're better than the alternatives.
