51 Republican Senators will start off in the 115th Congress.

As United States v. Ballin underlined, a simple majority - 51 - of Senators is needed to further and pass legislation.

If Democrats wish to contest that elementary reality by citing the filibuster rule, the presiding officer of the Senate can simply declare the filibuster rule invalid and that the decision can then be upheld by a simple majority of 51.

It seems a minority of 48 would not logically wish to taunt a majority of 51 into that nuclear option.

The Constitution is clear that both the House and the Senate are distinctively empowered to make up their own chamber rules concerning their own affairs, which the Senate filibuster rule most certainly is one.

The only non-simple majority concerns are those the Constitution itself points out (overturning presidential vetoes, passing Amendements, eg). Otherwise, simple majorities in both the House and Senate can do what they want.

Because Harry Reid broke with over 200 years of tradition and invoked the nuclear option in order to pass Obamacare. You can hope that the Republicans if push comes to shove will be more gentlemanly about it but they have no requirement that they do so.

Nope, it isn't about the point of view; it's about how ideas are expressed. I see it from both parties and many points on the spectrum. Instead of facts and clearly supported ideas, it's name calling. It's about being so emotionally invested in a point of view that any disagreement is taken as a personal affront or insult.
I wasn't defeated by the victory of any candidate. But I think we all lose when it becomes ok to demonize opponents and demean their motives.
What I see as defeated is intelligence and rationality, replaced with emotions, mostly negative, and an inability to agree on facts as a basis for discussing real solutions.
I didn't aim my remarks at any candidate or their supporters, just at the methods people have resorted to using and the ways they seem to think - and that it now seems acceptable.
