Criticism !!!

If you read someone's story you shouldn't be afraid to leave praise or constructive criticism. I did on most of the stories I've read. Constructive criticism will help a struggling writer like myself improve. You don't have to be nasty. Just point out things that you think help, too wordy, sex scenes not graphic enough, unbelievable story line ( if not sci fi or fantasy ). I don't know about you but I'm not whoring myself out because you threaten to post a nude selfie of me...but that's just me. Some well meant criticism will make for better reading. You can do it anonymously if you wish.

After 14 years of having stories posted on Literotica there have been very few comments or feedback that are critical and useful, and hundreds that are just abusive.

Most of the helpful comments have come from people who frequent the Authors' Hangout. Thank you.

But anonymous? There have been some useful comments but they are rare.

This is a reading site, not a critique site. Sure authors want more feedback (especially if it's praise), but there's no "should" here to commenting or voting on a story. That's just author wishful thinking. How many of you who put stories here send responses to the authors of books and articles you read--or comment on them on Goodreads or where they are for sale on line? Not many, if any, I'll bet. I've worked with a lot of authors and writing groups in the mainstream and I've rarely found an author who will provide public comment on another author's work (even after I've pointed to the mutual benefit to be hand by posting Amazon reviews to each other's work) unless they are personal friends--but they all think everyone who reads their work should provide public response to it.

I note, Ezrollin, that you haven't favorited any authors or stories here. How are you coming on voting or leaving comments on other author's stories here yourself?

I haven't favored any author's but I have left praise and constructive criticism from my view point as a reader. I think I started out only voting on the new stories and maybe a few old ones. Now that you have brought it to my attention I will vote on every story i read. If I preach it, it's only right that I do it !

Criticism is fine but trolls well....

I am in complete agreement that criticism is definitely needed all the time to point out any number of things that are valid opinions.

I even have no problem with people that just post "fuckin hated it" and nothing more lol.

But something I am still getting used to are the occasional just downright mean comments.

I mean right now as I type this I have the number one most viewed story over the last 30days and average rating of 4.54 which means most people who have read the story liked it. But still the occasional troll pops up every now and then.

I think in the end it is just the nature of putting yourself out there. Someone is always going to be a jerk you just need to dismiss them and move on. We are the ones who worked hard creating and editing a good story for people.

I know this though, I am certainly not going to let the haters ruin my day.

I'm a newbie so I don't know the politics here. Perhaps we can make it a friendlier site. Some here already seem to have animosities toward each other and that is their business. I choose not to get involved.

But its not the same as a detailed critique like you would get from a professional reviewer.

When people say "could use a proof reader" I think it has some credence. You don't have to be a literary critic to notice a boat load of misspelled words or very bad grammar. But its also a free site so...can fall under what do you expect?

Then I looked close at the name and it seemed familiar. Amazon has a feature where you can see a reviewers entire review history. This person gave several high five reviews to members of a writing group here, that he is part of, then tore mine apart because they don't like me here.

Case in point that amazon is not much of a better barometer than here.

Good reads I admittedly know little about. I have a book there, it has a couple of decent reviews, but I've never really pushed there like I should.

Guess that's more frustrating to the people who liked that story. That it was pretty good-going by general feedback-and I could care less about it.

Maybe I misunderstood you and concede that you have a valid point. My intention is to get and give any helpful advice from anyone willing to respond. i will not get into a back and forth with some one who's main purpose is to have an on going argument.
