A Little help please.
Wife and I are new to BDSM and we've tried some spanking. Just using belts we had at home. Could someone give me a little info on other spanking instruments. I've read about some (floggers, crops, leather paddles, canes (they scare me to death)).
Anyone that has some experience, please give a little help.

I have much to say on this topic, but alas I am currently using my phone to type. I'll give you a full response tonight when I get home.

In the meantime, hooray for hitty things!!!

For what it's worth, my husband bought a fairly simple paddle - flexible leather one side, satin the other - no studs, holes, or embossing. He didn't want to ever use a belt on me (his dad used one on him and his siblings) but the arthritis in his hands makes spanking too painful for him to do without using something. The paddle's easy enough to grip and give the noise both of us want without the fear of accidentally overdoing the pain side of things.

A flexible paddle can be used to create far more noise than pain if you bring it down one way, or you can make it sting a bit more just by changing the angle, even if you hit no harder. IMHO it's more controllable than a belt and maybe less likely to hurt more than you or your wife want.

thanks for replies

Miles...looking forward to what you have.

Penuce...we are thinking about a flexible paddle, they look nice. Want to stay away from hard paddle (I think).

There are some great kitchen utensils; however some of them really hurt. (ie. wooden spoons, spatulas) You can go into your backyard and get a switch. (ouch). Hairbrushes have been used, but actually anything that won't effect the deep tissue would probably be preferable for you. Good implements are light, flexible ones, those that bend easily upon contact with the skin.

Anything can be used for spanking, but your best bet are ones that inflict pain on the skin and don't go deeper. So flexible is good.

I'm a big fan of the hand. I love the intimacy of that physical connection ... the idea of using something else just feels like the whole thing would be too distanced (although I'd maybe stretch to a belt) ... but of course, that's just me.

Get somthing with a good action, no need to be Ty Cobb, practice on a watermelon, there used to be good tutorials on You Tube.

Disclaimer: The following is based on my experience only...

For spanking type stuff, there are two kinds of whack feelings: thuddy and stingy.

The bigger or thicker the item, the thuddier the whack. If the surface of the paddle is larger, my butt absorbs a lot of that impact. It's an odd feeling because - for me - the initial impact makes me grunt. It hurts but then that hurt sort of flows through my butt up through the rest of me.

These bigger, thicker items are more likely to leave bruises.

The thinner or smaller the item, the stingier and, for me, more hurtful. Canes, crops, quirts, there's a thing called a dragon tail that's particularly nasty.

These skinny implements can break skin really easily. They will leave welts vs. bruises. They make me gasp!

You mentioned you're scared of crops. Rightly so. I still have a scar from a misplaced hit made by a dragon's tail. That being said, I've had some lovely experiences with these thinner implements. A bamboo cane feels really nice if you're not - as NoeMasks said - wailing these things like Ty Cobb.

Always, always safety first. Seriously. Google how to spank. You have to beware of hitting a tailbone or kidneys. Another nasty thing is the "wrap around" when you're using something like a belt. You don't want the end of the belt to wrap around to the front of the hip.

Using household implements is always fun. A wooden spoon or a spatula. A tennis shoe. A plastic hanger. I have this amazing Mickey Mouse shoe horn I got from Ikea. A ruler.

Part of the fun is learning. Taking your time experimenting. If you do buy something like a cane or quirt, or are using a ruler or hanger. try it on your inner thigh first. Go light.

When you start spanking someone else, a "warm up" is always good. Light taps, Symmetry is always good. 3 taps on one cheek, 3 on the other. Otherwise you sound like bongos and it's distracting. Unless you like bongos.

Whenever you're spanking, be sure to do a lot of rubbing, too. It soothes the hurt.

Be sure to do a lot of... stuff your partner finds arousing. So you smack the ass a few times, rub the ass then say something like "let's just check how wet this is making you" and pull her pussy lips apart. Or rub your cock on her face and then go back to whatever evil thing you were doing.

Reminder: this is coming from my experience sooooooo - that's stuff I like in between the swats, spanks, whacks.

Practice makes perfect.

Good luck!!

Thanks for reply cookiecat.

We have a low cost flogger & some bed restraints coming soon. Hope we can move up a notch. I've been watching as many videos as I can. The one's that intrigue me the most is the one with the cane. I know it hurts pretty good, but I love to see the marks it leaves. I think it amazing how many strokes some of the people can take. I have a bamboo patch in my back yard. Wonder if I should cut a stalk?

Hey OP, it's very cool that you and the wife are branching out into new spanking implements besides the belt! Here are my thoughts on the instruments you listed in your post:

Floggers: When you start spanking with implements, you pretty quickly start dividing them according to what types of pain you get from them. Typically there is stingy pain and thuddy pain. Floggers as a category are varied enough that some are very stingy, some are very thuddy, and some are in between. Before making an investment I would try to experience a few different ones to see what your preference is. Some people love stingy but can't stand thuddy and vice versa; others love both depending on their mood. I have a really nice flogger that has medium-width falls, and it's basically in the middle between thuddy and stingy. If you decide to buy a flogger, it's worth spending a little extra to get a well-made one. They can be works of art in their own right and with proper care will last you a long time. One thing you need to watch out for when spanking with a flogger is your aim. Take the time to practice on a pillow and get a feel for where the falls will land. Few things take a person out of their happy spanking place than feeling a flogger wrap around their hip, so practice before you hit someone!

Crops: Crops are great because they can be used to spank just about anything. The ass, thighs, cunt, clit, tits, and nipples can all react reallllllly well to a spanking from a crop. Crops make a really satisfying THWACK sound on the skin and can leave beautiful marks. If you think you're going to want to expand your spankings to more body parts than just the ass, you definitely want to get a crop. When shopping for a crop give the item an inspection at the store. You want to avoid ones with rough edges on the shaft or the head (insert your own joke here) because that can lead to abrasions on the skin that you're not trying to cause.

Leather Paddles: Leather paddles are a classic. As others have noted they make a great noise, their bark is often worse than their bite, and they just look nice. They are perfect for turning an ass that rosy red color we all know and love. Mine has leather on one side and faux fur on the other side. I like that combo because it allows you to give some sensation contrasts on their skin. You can even have them guessing which side you're going to use, which opens up the game to some fun mind-fucks, if you're into that sort of thing. Also, don't be so quick to discount the hard paddle - yes they are hardcore, but you can hit gently with them and get the desired effect. I have a lovely wooden paddle that adds a nice dimension to the arsenal. And it wasn't even originally a spanking paddle! I got it as part of a beer flight paddle with 4 small tasting glasses. I just spank using the bottom side of it and it works great.

Canes: Hoo boy, canes. There are few things out there a top can use to royally fuck up a bottom with so little effort as canes. I've seen some hardcore pain sluts give a big ol NOPE when their tops get out the canes. You've got your whippy, bendy canes like the classic rattan or bamboo, and you've got your stiffer canes usually made out of some kind of fiberglass, although I've also seen steel canes. All of them make a great whoosh noise when you swing them through the air, and they leave great marks on your body. But fuck do they hurt. You won't have to swing hard to leave a lasting impression in the bottom's mind. They are lots of fun, but most people won't be able to take an extended session because they can just do some really serious damage if you go too hard. Also, it's worth pointing out that they serve as a great deterrent to bratty behavior. I've seen some mouthy brats get really quiet really fast when their tops start reaching for the cane. Something to think about if your spankings are part of some fun kinky power dynamics.

Whatever instruments you start using, it's important to remember that when you spank with an instrument instead of your hand you're removing one of your ways to get feedback about how the spanking is going for the bottom. With new instruments it's a good idea to check in often with the bottom to see how it's going. As Jay Wiseman says in SM 101 (a book I highly recommend): start lighter than light, go slower than slow. You can always work your way up to more intensity as you both get more comfortable with the various implements.

I also recommend having something like a Wartenberg wheel on hand to provide some sensation contrast during a spanking. If you get a bottom's sweet spot (right there where the thighs meet the buttocks) warmed up with a spanking and then run that wheel right across there, damn that gets you a reaction! Just a little something to think about.

Sorry if that's way more info than you were actually looking for, or just the wrong info for your question. Spanking is near and dear to my heart and a topic on which I can easily get carried away. I agree with the points everyone else made so far, and if you guys really start to get into it I would also recommend reading the following books:

SM 101 by Jay Wiseman (mentioned above)
Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns by Molly Devon and Philip Miller
The New Topping Book by Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy
The New Bottoming Book by Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy

While these books are not solely about spanking, they all have excellent information on spanking and implements and technique, so I recommend them.

Other than all that, good luck and have fun!

I was told to come give insight but between Miles and Cookie I'm just going to applaud and exit stage left...

Miles thinks for the low down. Sorta hard for me to believe that I'm talking about spanking. We've had three belt sessions (with me as bottom) and man it gets you going!! Can't wait to expand our time. So, I'm thankful for all the advice.

What about a good old fashioned ping pong paddle?

One of our first purchases after arriving at this forum was a better quality flogger. ( from a lady we met here, coincidentally, she had been patient in talk through the types, and when we met her in person we liked her stuff). It was followed by a second.

I love a thud. :) but a flogger can be used also for other sensual experience, it can 'tickle stroke 'gently to raise goose bumps in warm up or between and swish across the skin and . The leather can be soft and sensual and the smell can wonderful. Even just the fronds held around a limb or throat....( due caution observed obviously) has a feeling different to other restraint. Is one of the few actual 'bdsm' things or sex toys we have, our floggers, now three, and I love them. When G picks one up I shiver. He does 't always use it, but I still shiver. It means something, like a rider carrying a whip, not necessarily for use.

I bought mine from a Litster, too! ;) She makes great items.

The crop is the most versatile I am learning. Proper use of the crop can leave a mark on the ass and the clit begging for the next one, at the same time.

U of MN colors!

The handle is interesting. Is it comfy??

Technically it's Gryffindor, but sure. ;)

Yes the handle is very comfy. I can swing this thing for a long time with no discomfort. Well, for my hand anyway. Can't say the same for the person I'm swinging at!
