EU vote tomorrow. the most important day in the history of England?

I was, I didn't think the UK had the spine to stand on their own.

I'm a bit out of it when it comes to politics and to the temperature in Europe.

I only know what several of my Brittish colleagues or friends told me about what led to their decision to leave their country, and to settle in NZ or Au.
By the same token, I also know of a few Brits. who decided just recently to go back to the UK, which makes it even more confusing for me.

LONDON (The Borowitz Report)—Across the United Kingdom on Friday, Britons mourned their long-cherished right to claim that Americans were significantly dumber than they are.

Luxuriating in the superiority of their intellect over Americans’ has long been a favorite pastime in Britain, surpassing in popularity such games as cricket, darts, and snooker.

But, according to Alistair Dorrinson, a pub owner in North London, British voters have done irreparable damage to the “most enjoyable sport this nation has ever known: namely, treating Americans like idiots.”

'tis a pity....

There were some terrible Eco light bulbs. They took ages to light up and stayed dim. The ones now, a different sort are literally brilliant. Regardless of cost of replacement, if you have the dim sort it's worth replacing them Ogg.

I only use overhead lighting when I need bright light, so the dim or slow to heat up sort are no good to me, but the type we have upgraded to mostly are better I think than old light bulbs.

This thread is about the EU vote.... and everyone (almost) is talking about light bulbs. Are light bulbs perhaps euphemisms.... dim bulbs are Yanks...? Or Brits? -- for example. Long day of traveling today-- it's so much more fun to read between the lines, even if the lines aren't there.

Hi Elle!!!!

depressing.

they hate him.
and... I like his policies, I think he has integrity, but I think he's lacking the grit it takes to lead. his ''it's shit but it beats the alternative.'' stance on the eu drove it home. absolute honesty isn't the best policy sometimes. he failed his first big test.

He is personally opposed to the EU (as any principled leftist with a functioning intellect is). But he was obliged to argue party policy.

I'm from the north east which for years was a labour stronghold. There was a overwhelming out vote in our area. Corbyns remain in was never going to happen here.we are he's or labours "safe" bets. Not any more. He should go. The bread and butter of this country have had enough. If we fuck it up at least we'll fuck it up ourselves and not a non elected parliament hundreds of miles away. Power to the working class of this country.

It's the Blairites in the Parliamentary Party that you should take issue with. JC is anti-EU.

Another one joins, another one joins, another one joins the list.

Oh look Hard Rom, another liberal ignoring anyone who doesn't agree with everything he says and tell him his shit smells of roses.

Just like SR71!!

Lol

HardRom takes himself berry, berry seriously with his iggy list.
He keeps updating people on it's status, as if he's some sort of gold standard of cleverness and morality, towards which the GB folks should aspire.

What a pompous dummy! :D

BUT - and it is a big BUT - the reasons for voting either for Leave or for Remain are extremely complex and confusing. What is certain is that (except for Nicola Sturgeon in Scotland) most UK politicians misread the mood of the country. Labour and Conservative Remain campaigners got it wrong.
What it means? Fuck knows!
You're so right.
To add to my own confusion: I'm now reading the news, and depending on their allegiances and political affiliations, I see that massmedia are completely polarized on their opinions, and are focusing on entirely different aspects.
Talk about a propaganda war, on top of everything else…

Just two examples from two extreme positions: (N.B. to the skittish progressive posters: - RT is just an example because I couldn't be bothered to search for a better one. I'm not a rusophile):

Brexit 'Leave' Voters Get An Unexpectedly Fast, Harsh Dose Of Reality
http://www.forbes.com/sites/johnmcq...edly-fast-harsh-dose-of-reality/#1440eafc7326

In democracies, politics at the national level often revolves around powerful sentiments and grand abstractions. But here’s the thing. National politics is also about reality. Maybe we’re in the age of the low-information voter who ignores evidence and disdains expertise; but what interesting about Brexit is that, ]due to the nature of the issue, reality is crashing down much faster than usual. The list of instant consequences is long and getting longer.

Markets plunged, as did the pound, raising the specter of a possible global recession. Scotland, which voted decisively to “Remain,” and whose leaders would like to remain in the EU, began gearing up to leave the United Kingdom. The EU suggested Britain get out as quickly as possible.

For a more fine-grained view, there’s the case of Cornwall, which voted overwhelmingly for “Leave.” Officials are now afraid it will lose EU subsidies that have helped keep the regional economy afloat."

Putin on Brexit: No one wants to support weak economies
https://www.rt.com/news/348201-putin-brexit-weak-economies/rt.com

“I think it’s comprehensible why this happened: first, no one wants to feed and subsidize poorer economies, to support other states, support entire nations,” the Russian president said at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tashkent.

“Apparently the British people are not satisfied with the way problems are being solved in the security sphere, these problems have become more acute lately with the migration processes,” Putin said, suggesting the second reason for the British people to have voted ‘out.’

For the UK, Europe and for [Russia] this referendum is sure to have consequences […] of a global sort. They are inescapable. There will be both positive and negative ones.
The markets will surely lose ground, they have done so already, but in the midterm everything will be restored, surely,” Putin predicted."

Rush to exit? Politicians clamor for EU membership referendums at home
https://www.rt.com/news/348271-eu-politicians-want-out/

"Euroskeptic parties across the EU have been inspired by the British 'Leave’ vote with right-wing politicians in the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and France all calling for referendums on their countries’ membership in the bloc.

"Recent polls in European countries showed the British example could be taken up by many in, if not most of, the bloc. Polls conducted in Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary indicated that up to 40 percent of the population in these states could ‘want out’ of the EU."

The UK referendum results illustrate the fact that the american public and european politicians have been completely out of touch with what's been happening in Europe, and with the prevailing mood of the european layperson, respectively.

For the indoctrinated american public who borrows ideas from massmedia, the EU was all about racial equality and bridging gaps between people. Any person who claimed otherwise was automatically labelled as "racist".

For the european politicians, EU was more about power. EU allowed them to collaborate in taking decisions behind closed doors, without consulting the public.

Although a small part of Brit.'s votes had to do with the poorly monitored aspect of migration, I believe that it had more to do with opposing and keeping in check an establishment that they don't trust.

Holy shit. We agree on something.

:(

Fuck.

From Trump yesterday

"Come November, the American people will have the chance to re-declare their independence. Americans will have a chance to vote for trade, immigration and foreign policies that put our citizens first. They will have the chance to reject today’s rule by the global elite, and to embrace real change that delivers a government of, by and for the people," he said. "I hope America is watching, it will soon be time to believe in America again."

I hate to break it to him. When you own golf courses in Scotland, YOU ARE A GLOBAL ELITE.

So he wants the American people to reject him?

So confusing.

Which country does he control? Which population? Which campus? Which economy? Which government?

When we speak of the elites, I think it is understood that just being rich and prosperous does not land you an automatic membership into the Club. You must prove by your works, deeds, ambition and sometimes just plain old cash that you feel yourself booted, spurred and born to ride upon the backs of the people.

Donald Trump is not considered elite by most of those who consider themselves elite.
