Stellar violence is uncommon, I think I've come across 3-4 remarkable violent scenes during my 67 years, and two of them were from the American Civil War. The third was civilian slaughter Laurel will never approve.

Violence isn't appealing to most writers, I vividly recall the first time I killed someone in Vietnam. The whole event is firmly in my brain, as is the occasion when I was so injured death seemed at hand, and I had to decide to live or die. it coulda gone either way. I believe we confront the choice often.

I think writing violence is not much different than writing sex. Both have passion and agression(but different types) involved and the need to describe a lot of physical movements and their effects. Course in hardcore BDSM scenes I've done scenes that could read as both.

I've never been to war or killed anyone. I tried to kill someone barehanded back when I was twenty and got a fun two year vacation out of it where I got into quite a few fights there.

Until I got out of there and decided to get my shit together most of my early life was fighting, bad home, in an inner city environment then getting picked on for being a foster kid-pound puppy was my school nickname-and fighting anyone who did.

So fight scenes are easy for me, except...

Just like in Holly wood BS movies where fights go on and on for show, people like the same in fiction as well, drawn out, a serious of spectacular moves and people who can deliver and take a unrealistic beating.

In real life anyone with even the basic skills taught in the military or Police academy know any fight lasting more than a few seconds is bullshit, Most fights are very quick and brutal and done quick. In martial arts we're told right up front if you can't finish a fight in a couple of moves then you're in deep shit.

how many times did you have to kill this person in vietnam? wasn't the first time enough?

mind, i always say 'kill them again' when the evil-doer gets the chop in a film. like glenn close in fatal attraction. MD shoulda killed her twice the first time, then she wouldn't have come up out of the bath.

The only lengthy fights I've seen were in tournaments and they last because you have rules and a referee and a bell.

I was so-so on those things, won more than I lost, but not by much. But a lot of the guys who are great in the controlled environment of a ring would get their asses kicked in a street fight because they expected rules or reason.

I was always better in a bar or street fight because that's how I grew up and I had no issue with hurting someone because I wasn't wearing gloves.

Like anything else, raw ability will usually trump 'technical' skills.

Ali was a freak of nature. I loved him for the fact he was the best trash talker ever and he always backed it up.

One of his best lines was "I'm so mean I make medicine sick" I could listen to him all day.

I still remember one of the comments from a reader on a story where the protag just dropped a character in his tracks for almost no reason. He was a dick and deserved what he got, but this reader actually asked "how could you just kill someone like that?" My answer, "It's fiction honey. I can do whatever I want."

I had someone send me a e-mail one times saying it was Bullshit that someone could knock someone out with one punch. I replied, "Have you ever been struck in the temple, hard?"

fact is, its less realistic when a guy can take ten punches and kicks to the head and still be fighting.

Just watched a YouTube vid where a guy did that to a thug that flicked a cigarette into his girls hair as they walked by. One punch to the face and the guy dropped like a sack of potatoes.

One punch to the chin, just right and in just the right spot will KILL them. I think it has to do with the spinal cord in the back of the neck.

A palm strike to the forehead can force the head back and even break the neck. A proper strike to the philstrum can kill. A proper strike to the temple can kill.
The only practical way that a jaw strike can kill is to use the forearm, or a back elbow strike with a LOT of force.
