I think that you might be partially right.
- In that, if College admitance criteria were too lax, it would make sense for students to pay their way through (mind you, not an exorbitant fee, tho).

However, the way I see it (I don't live in the US, to know how things are over there):
- From my experience, the standards for college admittance were quite high. So it would not be fair, to enable people with money to focus solely on their studies (thus achieving high grades), whereas those who are poor would have to work and study (therefore, unlikely to achieve higher grades).

So overall, my concern is mainly about the system being rigged in favour of those who have money.
Would there be a different solution, a compromise between these two opposing views? (ie yours, mine).

I don't know how things are in the US. But keep in mind, I was raised in Europe, and things were a bit different there and then. And our teachers were and are held in high regard; I personally feel like I owe a lot to a couple of my teachers, who put + + time and effort tw. helping us succeed in life.
And the standards for admittance ( College for primary school, University for high-school teachers, or extra postgrad.training for other professionals who want to go into academics) are generally v. high in Eu.

There was an article today about what the U.S. can learn from Denmark. In the article they talk about free or heavily subsidized health care, education and job training and compensation when unemployed, out sick from work or on parental leave.

However, the one piece everyone forgets is nothing is free and someone has to pay for it. The average tax rate in Denmark is 38.4% compared to 24.8% in the U.S.

If people whine now about how much taxes they pay (we really don't compared to all the Scandinavian countries or even Germany), imagine how much they'll squeal if they had to pay an extra 14% in taxes, not including VAT on goods and services.

People, especially Americans place no real value on free stuff and make no serious commitment to it. In fact, and you can look around your community to see if this is more, or less, a truism, the more an instructor charges for lessons, the more people think they are getting and as he gets bigger and more prosperous, his students take pride in belonging to such a successful dojo/dojang/kwoon.
