Tomorrow Ireland votes on a referendum to support same sex marriage or not. They already allow civil partnerships.

The three main political parties support the 'Yes' campaign. The Catholic Church of Ireland is the main supporter of the 'No' campaign.

This is a big deal. A 'Yes' vote would mean a change in Ireland's constitution. If the 'Yes' vote is large enough it might also revisit other divisive issues such as family planning and abortion laws. The Irish constitution was originally drafted to take account of the Catholic Church's significant influence in Ireland.

Both sides of the campaign are worried about the impact of the referendum. It could be towns and cities against the rural population.
 
I'd say that this news would have my grandmother spinning in her grave, except I'm not entirely sure she would have known what homosexuality was.
