Are whole grains really healthy? Is fat really bad? Is science skewed by the idea 19th century idea of calories? The FDA food pyramid has killed, and hurt more people than any war, yet we still follow it.

"Whole Grain" is a marketing gimmick. We aren't cows and our guts can't break down the whole grain in such a manner that we can absorb the minerals contained therein.

No grains are good for humans.

That's not to say they don't taste yummy.

I agree, the whole grain idea is a leftover hippie idea, adopted by poor science. I don't trust nutritionists, they have been brainwashed.

Grains

It was all God's idea. See Ezekiel 4:9.

Back then the grains were different than those today. Is our digestion more like a dog or a cow, look at the poop difference, Should dogs eat grain? Sorry for the thought

Starch is the devil.

More true than you know. Sugar is highly addictive. Sugar, starch, and other carbs are (chemically) alcohols.

Humans did not evolve to eat Gramineae / Poaceae -- grasses, including wheat, rice, rye, barley, oats, maize corn, bromus, millet, sorghum, sugarcane, all that stuff we started cultivating about 8000 years ago. Our dentition and digestion are built for flesh and nuts. Worse, the main USA strains of wheat have been genetically modified for economic production, but with side-effects. My partner is NOT gluten-intolerant but finds that eating modern wheat produces joint pains, indigestion, lethargy, all of which go away when we switch to buckwheat or quinoa flour -- those are not grasses. If wheat is a must, eat legacy wheat.

What an odd thread.

A whole grain is a commercial grain that contains the bran, endosperm, and germ. A refined grain contains only the endosperm.

Whole grains contain more protein, iron, fiber, and other nutrients than refined grains. Some refined grains are enriched, meaning nutrients are added back in, but tend to still be low in fiber and protein.

Eating whole grains instead of refined grain reduces your risk of cardiovascular diseases. They also tend to make you feel full for longer as they take longer to digest. Just because something is made with a whole grain though doesn't make it healthy. I could easily make a whole grain muffin with a ton of sugar and sodium. Whatever you eat, it's important to look at the nutrition and ingredient label on the back.

You can skip grains entirely and still have a healthy diet, just like you can skip meat entirely and still have a healthy diet.

I disagree with the idea that grains are innately bad or "unnatural," and so should be avoided.

Fats are calorie heavy and it's easy to go overboard with them. They're still an important micronutriant though. I don't think any serious nutritionist considers them "bad" given they're necessary for healthy living.

My doctors seem to think that saturated fats are evil, and trans fats are the devil.

You won't get me eating quinoa ever again!!! that stuff is gross! I had prepared twice, once by a hippie cook, once by a classically trained chef. Both times it tasted like wet, bland seeds.

I actually liked it, only the tan stuff not the red stuff. I cooked it in my rice cooker BUT I started reacting to it so no more quinoa for me. It was nice instead of couscous, which I am allergic to, in a salad.

I love couscous, made with vegetable broth. I add raw veggies to it, eat it like salad.

I have only had it in blends with wild rice. The rice cooks, the bland.wet seeds as you call them (accurately) make for an interesting texture in the rice.

I love grass seeds, err wild rice, mixed in with white rice. I can't do brown rice: the chewy texture is a major turnoff.

I'll cook the wild rice in veggie broth, do the white in chicken and mireproix - onions, celery and carrots. Mix them up.

I had some tonight. It tasted fine to me.
