son of the isolated blurts thread!

Colleges ahoy!
This is the stack of college flyers Babyminx got yesterday. It will get thrown on top of the rest of them in her room until it can be sorted into the 'I want to research this one' or the 'oh hell no' piles. We are going to be visiting quite a few this summer I think, as a lot of them include offers to come and stay and check them out.

I have not given in to the temptation to hide the ones that are super far away. She is only a jr, so I have a whole other year to gird my loins for her leaving, but man oh man, do I get a flutter in my heart every time I look at that pile.

And with all the trees that have given their lives for all these flyers, I keep expecting the Lorax to show up. Maybe I can just adopt him. We could boogie down.
Lorax antler dance

Don't forget Oxford. You can all stay with me. Loads of scholarships, too.

My daughter has also been getting a lot of those. She filled out a form at a college fair, and the deluge began. I had never heard of most of the schools sending her stuff. So far she has steadfastly said that she plans to attend our local state university, in spite of my wife and me pushing her to look at out of state schools. It's not that we want to push her out of the nest, but rather finding a good fit. I keep telling her that she should check out the schools that make sense based on her rather impressive (to me anyway) GPA and her career aspirations. I'm not made of money, but it seems to me that she should be able to get some financial aid with her GPA and extracurricular interests. On the plus side, she is a finalist for her first scholarship award :) She's also a Jr, but time flies and all.

As far as hiding the ones that are far away, my (former) sister in law was infuriatingly devious. Any application to an out of state school was circular filed or sabotaged behind my niece's back. She was pretty angry when she discovered that. But all's well that ends well. She now has a master's degree and a good job.

Good luck with the college hunting.

Jesus, Mary & Joseph! Another blizzard on it's way. Possibly another two feet of snow - on top of the 4+ feet we already have. I give up! I'm done shovelling. I'm just going to sit in the house until all the snow melts.....June, maybe.

My autistic suicidal 17-year-old has her heart set on attending a private college in Vermont. :(

If it's the one that's well-renowned for its language school, I can report that it's a stunningly beautiful place to live and study.

You should have seen the grin when I mentioned that one to her.

I would never do that to my babyminx. I want her to fly, and do everything she's ever dreamed about, and go wherever she wants to go. She scored top 1% in the nation on her PSATs. She takes the SATs by the end of the month, and then the scholarship hunt begins in earnest. She's all about the extracurriculars too and is working on an internship to the big hospital in the area for the summer. She should be able to get something.

We are just supposed to get enough to make it annoying but not a big haul. I don't blame you imemkay--I'd hide out until Spring too if I were up yonder.

Babyminx wants Harvard, but she's also checking out Ohio State because of the marching band. lol

Today while driving in traffic, a colleague sees a man limping along the sidewalk, out of the corner of her eye.

She points him out, turns to me and whispers, "Walker."

Ensuing laughter lasted 3 traffic lights. :)

Same day, two hours later, I let two people go.
Even with cause, I hate firing people. :(

What a day.

*reaches for scotch and tumbler*

*Pours a double for Em, and pats him on the shoulder* Would seeing boobies help?

Should she go The OSU route, this lesbro is close enough to be a resource. :)
Oh honey, you might regret that. I only tell the funny stuff about babyminx, I keep the appalling stuff under wraps, you know for plausible deniability and stuff.

I hate it when I have to let someone go. The last one was a friend of mine, which made it suck all the more.

That's some damn fine aspirin, though.

Obligatory blurt - quoting Dr. Who was surprisingly fun, although admittedly I bastardized the quote for my own purposes.

I am maudlin. Life has been tough since my partner's mother died unnecessarily. The last of our parents' generation is gone. We will unstress eventually.

There will be changes. We will have more time, more money, more freedom, but fewer connections. The local family will drift away, no longer siblings and cousins within a stone's throw -- this is already planned. Other family may move nearby, coming a few hours closer. All is transition.

It's time for a mental health break. We'll be at the coast for a few days, watching gulls and waves and fishing boats and harbor seals. Pass the salt water taffy.

I know of no better place than by the sea, to heal and invigorate.

I hope you find the serenity you seek. And some badass salt water taffy.

hypoxia, be well & enjoy the taffy.

em, pplwatching: ugh. terminating even with cause does suck. i think the only thing that makes it OK is knowing you that your part of it was handled professionally and the employee with all the dignity the circumstance allows.

Does anyone else like to bite off the end of a Cadbury Creme Egg and then scoop the fondant out with their tongue?

Wishing you well. :rose:

Ppl and Em- I'm sorry. Letting people go, even with cause, is never easy.

Minxy - hang on, girlfriend! The weekend is almost here and then you can de-stress! And knowing you, I'm sure you're going to take full advantage of the time! ;):D

Miles - dammit, man! Now how am I supposed to concentrate with THAT image running around in my head?:D

Blurt: Tomorrow, I'm going to see if I can translate my neatnik tendencies into a career. Hoping I don't bite off more than I can chew, but knowing me, I probably will.

This movie really disappoints me.
Breezy, what movie? The suspense is killing me.

Bleck! I think I'd rather go dine in the pillow fight than eat one of those sugar slime eggs. *sniffs* I bet they aren't even free range.

Ah lovely. You know me soooo well. :D

I hope your career aspirations are realized, you get to do something you love, and you make fistfuls of cash at the same time.
