Why are there so many Indian doctors?

Is it like some kind of cultural tradition for Eastern Indian people to earn medical degrees?

One reason there are so many Indian doctors is there are a whole lot of Indians.

There are a lot of foreign doctors in my area because there's a program here where if you work in an impoverished area you can get some of your loans paid off. I know this because, interestingly enough, I work with a guy from India who's wife is a doctor, and it's the reason why they're here. He explained to me, in great detail, how it worked, and then I promptly forgot everything he told me.

To illustrate the point-

population of North & South America combined- 953 million

population of India- over 1.25 Billion

Lots of people on a mere subcontinent. I don't blame them for moving here, I would.

I like my Indian allergist, he was the first doctor in a bunch of specialists to figure out what was going on with me, also the first Indian doctor of the lot. It's fairly rare but he was bright enough to spot it. He wrote it down for me and told me to look it up on the internet.

In India, educating children is an important and integral part of raising the family. Children study in school for 12 years. As medical and engineering degrees give them higher returns as income, the push (from family, society and even self) is higher to go for professional courses and ultimate dream to make it big. It's not just doctors, you would find even a larger number of engineers.

In short the tradition is to allow children to spend childhood in learning, and think about earning only after they have completed at least 12 years of school education.

I prefer Asian doctors. I refuse to use doctors educated in the US; none can be trusted. The only exception are surgeons.
