One man has been shot dead inside Parliament, after a man with a rifle shot a soldier standing guard at the War Memorial in downtown Ottawa. Police and witnesses are reporting more shots at other locations surrounding Parliament Hill.

Video records sounds of multiple gunshots within Parliament.

The soldier shot was taken away by ambulance undergoing CPR. He was one of two soldiers guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

This follows a hit and run attack on two soldiers earlier in the week by Martin Couture-Rouleau. A suspected mentally ill recent convert to radical Islam. One soldier died. Couture-Rouleau was subsequently shot dead by police after a high speed chase.

Pretty nuts... and with what just happened in Montreal, a little scary 'round these parts.

(Ok, not around my parts, there are not enough people living in my general vicinity for me to be scared for my own safety.)

Still, I think Canadians like to think "that kind of thing doesn't happen here." But it does this week. :(

Can't happen. You guys don't have the NRA and gun nuts.

What a strange comment.

Many of the eye-witnesses had no idea what they were hearing when they heard the sound of gunfire. (One witness knew what it was because of her "country upbringing".)

You never hear gunfire in Canada or almost never. You can go your whole life and never hear a gun go off. It is not routine even in major cities. In the country during deer gun season you hear shots in morn or dusk.

It seems maybe shooter have long guns.

Just in! Three centers of shooting. Memorial, Parliament and Rideau Center.

It's unprecedented and shocking for everyone.

3 shooting 'incidents' all within a block of eachother being investigated

In the country you hear gunshots all the time... or at least near me. If its not deer season, its turkeys or geese, coyotes or coons getting shot. That said, I hadn't heard much in the way of gunfire before moving to the country. At least outside of attending skeet shooting matches and such!

Yes, though, generally if you live in a city in Canada, odds are you've never heard gunshots. Gun control works. More or less.

ETA: Yeah, the news aint getting better on this one. I have family in Ottawa, too.

any news on the soldier's condition? they've just said he was shot at point blank range :(

The GOP will soon demand a fence along the US northern border.

Yes, please. Would be a great idea. We can't afford it. Could you please include some sort of jammers so we don't get inundated by crappy American TV shows.

Dancing in the streets later to celebrate Islam coming to free Canada.

Martin Couture-Rouleau was described by friends as depressed and always looking for a cause. He convinced 5 friends to convert yet was only one to radicalize. Clearly he was just looking for an excuse to die, maybe for a cause, any cause.

Gun control lets our police outgun bad guys at least.

Real shame the PM just cancelled going to Toronto for a Nobel Peace Prize event.

No word on soldiers condition.

Really? I just heard Mark Steyn saying that statistically Canadians own more long guns than Americans...

Here's this:

1. VERY FEW PEOPLE IN CANADA OWN FIREARMS

Exactly the opposite is true: twenty-nine per cent of Canadian homes possess an estimated total of nine million firearms. Other authorities insist that even this figure is too low, and that there is at least twenty million firearms in Canada. The UN reported that Canada ranks third among the developed western countries (behind the United States and Norway) in the civilian ownership of firearms.

There is an average of three firearms in every gun-owning Canadian household. The majority of gun-owning households in Canada own rifles and/or shotguns; on a per capita basis, Canadians own nearly as many rifles as Americans.

Soldier is alive in hospital.

The gunman that was killed inside Parliament was shot by the Sergeant at Arms outside the government caucus room, where MP's were in a meeting...which is pretty cool for him.

Sure, as long as we can put some windows in the wall so we can still get medicine.

Why do the police even need to have guns! Ours don't... [/tone]
