Conservatives give more money to charity than liberals. That's the conventional wisdom, anyway, and at least one new study backs that thinking up.

"How America Gives," published by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, uses IRS data to determine giving patterns across the country, broken out by income ranges across ZIP codes, counties, and states. Researchers looked at adjusted gross income to determine how much people gave, and the study tracked about 80 percent of all money donated to charity by taxpaying Americans in 2012, the latest year for which IRS data was available.

While most coverage of the report has focused on the finding that top-earners have been giving a smaller share of their income to charity than poorer Americans, The Chronicle study also highlights "giving patterns," broken out by state and compared against how each state voted in the 2012 presidential election, i.e., whether it went for Romney or Obama.

Overall, the states in which people gave the highest percentage of their adjusted gross incomes were also states that voted for Romney, while states in which people gave the lowest percentage of their adjusted gross income went for Obama.

The top 17 states for rate of giving all went for Romney.

Isn't that special ....

It was pointed out in another thread that the study only counted charitable donations from people who itemize.
It was also pointed out that as income goes down, the percentage of income donated to charity goes up, with those earning < $20,000 per year generally donating the highest percentage.

IMO that's the most notable thing, not the politics of those donating, but the lowest income people make the greatest sacrifice.

is that justa lib staement or fact

where do you get the statistics to make a statement like the red states use the most welfare. that I think is a crock

Thanks and who gives a rat's ass. How many times do we need this thread?

Liberals are very generous - with other people's money.
It gets back to personal responsibility. Conservatives believe it is each person's responsibility as a member of the community to help those less fortunate. Liberals want to shift that responsibility to a central agency (government). It reminds me of that stupid meme about wanting to be a Christian nation but being against helping the poor. Conservatives want to help the poor, they just believe private charities are more effective than a central agency. Both approaches have their drawbacks. Private charities are better because they tend to get people out of poverty as opposed to welfare which fosters a culture of poverty and dependence. The concomitant lowering of taxes stimulates more private wealth and economic growth, thereby lessening poverty further. Anything would be better than the so-called "War on Poverty".

It gets back to conservatives want somebody else to pay the bill. Sam Walton did not want to give his employees a decent wage or benefits. He was as happy a pig in shit to let those employees go without or ride on the taxpayer's dime to get medical care.

That really does suck. Are you sure Walton wasn't a liberal? Wal-Mart is no good in every respect. It's gross.

If you care about charity why would you want to increase wealth?
It's clear from the data that, on average, as a person's wealth increases, they become less charitable.

A rising tide raises all ships. A robust economy leads to higher rates of employment.
More rich people equals less poor people.

Wrong... More rich people equals more poor people. Economics don't exist in a vacuum. The rich take the wealth from the poor, who are the ones who create the wealth, and do the actual work. Try again.

Except no one has provided any evidence of it's truth.

It is a very well-established fact that Liberals are freer with handouts to poor people than Conservatives. It's even better established that the money being doled out comes from the taxpayers, who are the other people being referenced.

Since liberals obviously pay taxes what's your evidence that liberals don't donate substantially to charity?
