Honeycrisp apples. I accidentally found them at Wholefoods last week for about $4 a pound (mistaking them for super expensive Galas). And now I'm spoiled for all other apples.

Honeycrisps are pretty nice but I can't get them on a consistent basis here. The one apple that is always available that I enjoy are golden delicious. Now I'm contemplating a breakfast that'll encompass some apples and blue cheese.

What the holy fuck, $4 a pound? I am seriously spoiled in Washington state. We pay half that for the best varieties. Probably because farmers from Eastern Washington flood the market right about now with roadside stands.

For eating I choose honeycrisp but I also like pink lady, granny smith, braeburn, gala and fuji. I buy the one that is cheapest. For cooking I use different kinds of apples.

Honeycrisp was developed in Minnesota and is great. The latest MN developed apple is Zestar which I don't like much.

When I was a boy, one of the local crops was cherries. Bing and Queen Anne Cherries. After the pickers went through, the farmer opened the trees up to the locals (i.e. the poor folk) (they also did this for green beans and potatoes as well)(but I digress). We would spend days climbing those trees and picking cherries. You had a bucket, and were supposed to pay by the pound but they never accounted for all of them we ate while picking.

Now you may ask how this is relevant to an apple thread - well, the convo has changed to the price of things. As a kid cherries were almost free. At the supermarket though, they are one of those things I refuse to buy (on principle) because they are too expensive.

Mr. Savage, Sr. was a huge man... probably 6'-5" + and well over 300 lbs. It was always exciting watching him climb up into those trees. You sure didn't want to stand under the branch he was sitting on.

I live 2200 kms north of the closest commercial apple orchards and I've rarely had a bad Golden Delicious. Not saying it doesn't happen but apparely they seem to transport well.
