The articles I saw called it a continent. I assume they are using the term figuratively. Giant mass of trash floating in the ocean is still pretty bad.

"3 Spains" = 586,050 (195,350 x 3).

Those are, indeed, comparable...

...while "4-7 Spains" is complete hyperbole: your "dead on" (4 Spains) of 33% larger than the area being offered, to your "a bit larger" (7 Spains) equating to over 100% larger than what's being discussed.

A French scientific expedition will depart the second of May to analyze and explore a huge mass of plastic trash, accumulated over decades in the Pacific Ocean.
