Storm in Southwest U.S.

Been cold and raining for the past three days. More to come over the next three days.

Yup, unseasonably cold and rainy. Some of it was heavy, but mostly it was what the Navajo call "female rain"...light to moderate and steady; as opposed to the summertime "male rain" that we usually see during our monsoon season.

We have a newly seeded alfalfa field behind our house (not ours, or it would NOT be alfalfa!). There is still some standing water in the corner. We have a small lake in the street because the storm drain isn't kept clear. During the peak of the rains, our back porch was flooded nearly to the wall of the house. (I, being from the east coast, keep lobbying for gutters, but Himself just rolls his eyes.)

There have been some "stupid driver" moments involving washes and flooding. The joy of it is that we have a law about that, so the "victim" has to pay for rescue services if it's been determined that they were morons. :D

I'm really hoping that this is a harbinger for a nice, wet winter. One of the news stations reported that this storm gave us more rain than the past 7 months of November combined!

We got a bit of rain at this backside of the storm but it hit harder further north before moving on. Any rain is welcome out in SoCal and we would have been quite happy for more of it.

I was rambling between Phoenix and Tucson with my son this afternoon (landscape shots for his photo class final), and was quite impressed by how much standing water is in and around the edges of almost every farmed area. South of us there are acres and acres of cotton fields, most of which have been harvested, so there are monster blocks of cotton bales along the edges. I wonder how much might spoil (mold or mildew) before it's loaded.

As a hand spinner, I was whining about not being able to do a bit of secondary harvesting. Maybe I'll re-investigate after a few warmer, drier days.

Hmmm. It looks like the East Coast is going to get your storm for Thanksgiving.

It does look like it's going to mess up traveling, at least on Wednesday. We're planning on driving to my in-laws' on Thursday, so hopefully we'll miss the storm, or most of it. Hope everyone keeps safe.

The storm will have a major impact on Thanksgiving travel. Best of luck to those who have to brave the weather.

We're not going until Thursday, but we're going to the top of a mountain, so we've already switched transportation to the 4-wheel-drive car.

Any AHers being affected by the monster storm sweeping the southwestern U.S.?

I noticed it seems to be the higher elevations that took the hit.

Almost like a blizzard in the mountains and standard shitty winter weather for lower elevations.

The timing is awful coincidental though, and I dunno if it's worth the national spotlight on the news considering the current state of politics.

Some might see my POV on weather danger with this::

It's horrible here. We have that lovely lake effect going on. High winds, snow, wind chill in the single digits with thetemps in the twenties. Roads are a mess, with accidents all over. I'm hoping it calms a bit before I have to go out tomorrow, but I don't think it's going to.

Lake effect snow? You must be in Chicago or somewhere in Michigan?

If it's the same one I'm hearing about it's going to nail us in the Ottawa to Montreal corridor Tuesday night to Wednesday. Maybe 30cm of snow. Sigh.

Did have travel plans but fortunately I was able to put them off until Friday so I should be OK.

Yep. Somewhere in Michigan.

I just came in from cleaning the car off (third time today). This is the first year I haven't had a garage in . . . forever . . . so this should be an interesting winter. And when I moved this summer, I just happened to end up closer to the lake than I was before.

I lived in Battle Creek for 25 yrs. I don't miss the snow at all, but I do feel your pain.

Thanks. I didn't mind it when I lived in town, where everything I needed was within three miles of my place. Now I'm at least fifteen miles away.

Storm poised to threaten holiday travel as it heads east; Midwest and West thaw out
Associated Press By Kelly p. Kissel.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- A sloppy storm system carrying heavy rainfall, ice and snow is slogging its way eastward, bringing the potential of headaches for travelers heading home for the Thanksgiving holiday.

National Weather Service spokesman Chris Vaccaro (vuh-CAYR'-oh) says the timing couldn't be worse as the storm dumps rain on parts of the southeast and brings the risk of snow and ice to the Appalachians, western Pennsylvania and western New York.

The storm system, already blamed for at least 11 deaths, could also spawn an isolated tornado in the Florida Panhandle.

Vaccaro says air travel will likely be disrupted Tuesday and Wednesday, with wet and windy weather predicted for many major airports in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

The storm system is expected to move out by Thanksgiving Day.
