I have always been slight of build and now as I get older I feel the need to put on about 10 to 15 pounds.

I eat when hungry, work my ass off, smoke cigs and of course drink too much coffee.

Does anyone have some suggestions for me?

Thanks in advance for your help. :D

Starch. You need rice, potatoes anything with starch. Extra protein as well in the form of weight gain powder for between meals. Kill the cigs and coffee they're appetite suppressors and metabolism speed uppers (a medical term).

yes, quit drinking so much coffee! Haven't you heard of the coffee and cigarette diet? It was the best friend of new college students in the 90's trying to avoid the freshman 15. Caffeine is a stimulant and an appetite suppressant. Cut down on the coffee and anything else containing caffeine. Good luck!

Beer.

Although... i do have to say.. it might not be ALL that effective. I figured out a few months ago that for all the beer i have consumed in my lifetime... I SHOULD weigh about 1100 lbs. And I am not even close. So... beer AND ice cream maybe?

Do the truly American thing and switch out the coffee for soda and start driving everywhere, including the mailbox. You'll pack it on in no time, especially if you cut back the sleep, ramp up the stress, and visit a doctor less frequently.

You know sex burns calories right CL?? STOP HAVING SEX:D

Great idea...get an electric wheel chair! Stop walking! You also want to find out your calorie requirements and make sure that you're over by at least 300 per day.

Why did everybody leave out sex. Have plenty of sex get hungry for more sex and on and on

Ahh... Carbs and sugar, baby. You should have gone on this trip with me, I ate a LOT of potato salad and chocolate, and I know where to find the best sausages... you know, the good and greasy ones :)

Kill the smoking habit and if you still don't pile on the kilos then increase your protein and carb intake and get on some kind of weight training program so you're bulking up on muscle mass and not flab.

Don't consume more than your requirement of essential fats unless you actually want to become fat.

Ben and jerry's ice cream.

pastries.

simple carbs (pasta, rice, bread, but not wholemeal)

god im so jealous. can we swap?

Everybody is dead wrong on this. Start lifting weights. Muscle weighs more than fat, and lifting is good for bone density. Squats target the largest muscles in the body... That's a good place to start. Increasing the amount of good carbs is a good idea too. Sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and whole grain anything. Look up clean eating for a full list.

Ahem.

Am I right in assuming that you want to build more muscle mass as opposed to actual weight?

First thing, check with your doctor. If your doc isn't concerned with your weight, neither should you. However, you may wish to go for blood-work to ensure that your thyroid and glucose is normal.

Second, as much as I hate to admit it, but the above poster is right: eat plenty of complex carbs, proteins and healthy fats (such as the one found in avocados and salmon).

Hit the gym four times a week, focusing on low-rep, high-weight drills, focusing on both major and minor muscle groups, and make sure that you do cardio for about 25-30 minutes. This does seem counter-intuitive, but you do need cardio in order to build up muscle. Do not exercise everyday. Your muscles need rest in order to build and to heal.

Yes, you can probably indulge in junk food more than a person watching his/her weight but this is not the way to gain mass. You'll gain fat and your muscles will grow weaker. Plus, you should probably quit smoking. I am going to keep my mouth shut about the coffee, but try to limit your intake and get your caffein kick from green or black tea in the afternoon.

You should aim to gain mass slowly and healthily, just as a person looking to lose it should do it slowly and healthily.

Good luck :)

Thank you all. Great courses of action to take I know. Now what if I am at the point of my life that cigs are just too much to stop?

Quit smoking. Substitute a food item for the cigarettes and that should help you pack on a few pounds. You'll also be less likely to develop emphasima, COPD and a host of other miseries.
