Not just me, anyone. The US has never been able to say what harm Manning's act did. He's doing 35 years because he embarrassed the US government. He should have known it was coming, a serving soldier, sailor, airman or marine giving away classified material is gonna do time, but don't try and pretend this was some massive harm to US soldiers or intelligence assets, it wasn't, it was an embarrassment to the politicians.

Diff is that Snowden I believe actually has altruistic motives as arguably misguided as they may be depending upon your view.. Manning motives was not as pure even though he is claiming same after the fact. Manning was pissed over a deployment he fought against. His motives were to get even for perceived wrongs. According to his own statements he had no idea what info he released to Wikileaks. So how could his motives be good if he is clueless to all that he released? Lucky for him it was nothing that caused lives.

Manning is a skunk. Snowden is no hero or saint and still guilty in my mind though at least he has mitigating factors per his motives which gives him some saving grace though it is moot as he will never leave Russia.

Manning was not a whistleblower. That was never his intent. That was a fabrication of his defense.

Snowden I'm not really sure he could be classified as a whistleblower. To my understanding the Patriot Act gives authority for the NSA actions. If true it is hard to be a whistleblower if you are divulging secret info on intelligence activity lawfully gained via this Act. I'm out of my dept but these are my thoughts on it.

While motives may not justify the crime it definitely mitigates the punishment. I'm not a lawyer but that his how I thought it works or at least should work.

To be honest for me Snowden did not release any info I did not suspect. I never once thought we had privacy. That super computer built out west is just not for show.
