A few years back, Channel 4 did a documentary called "100% English". They took the DNA from people who thought themselves to be (you got it) 100% English. If I remember correctly, there was not a single person among those tested who were 100% anything, let alone anglo-saxon.

Well, prejudice against Jews in England is nothing new. I remember reading in school that Edward I threw over 200 jewish leaders in the Tower, killed them and then passed an edict throwing out the remaining jewish population - after having confiscated their belongings. I don't know enough about Cromwell to argue what motivated his actions in Ireland. It might be hard for me to recognise any redeeming qualities in a man who oversaw a war that killed 40% of the indigenous population (if you include war related disease and famine) but I'm willing to be informed.

I and others have been tracing my paternal and maternal family trees. If I believe Ancestry(.com) the results are:

I call bullshit on Ancestry.com. There is no way to track anyone, let alone Britons, back to Caesar's day with any sort of accuracy, not to mention the fact that Caesar did so little, there wouldn't be much to flee from. Certainly not enough to be worth uprooting your entire life, when he showed up twice and then never appeared again. It'd be like moving away from New York after living there for generations because of Sandy.

My ancestors tribe were in what is now Belgium, then part of Gaul, and fought Caesar's legions and won. They lost, and fled across the Channel to the territory of the Iceni when Caesar took over command of the legions from his subordinates. My ancestors' territory was taken over by the Romans. Caesar wrote about my tribe's fight in his Gallic War, of course emphasising that it was his genius that saved the day.

Yes, about 100 years after Caesar's two punitive raids. JC was chasing the local inhabitants who had provided sanctuary to tribes like mine. Caesar justified his invasion by reference to people from Britain supporting and aiding resistance to the Roman occupation in Gaul. Even reading Caesar's biased account his invasions were monumental fuck-ups. He didn't get anywhere near the awkward brigade who were in league with the Germanic tribes.

As for Ancestry? I don't believe it either, but my (real) name has always been spelled the same, is traceable as a distinct name in East Anglia back before the Norman Conquest and is exactly as Caesar's Latin name for the tribe. How much of my DNA comes from that tribe? Very little.
