We got pictures of a helicopter but not of a fire. Pictures of a blue sky but not of smoke.
It's close enough to worry about the house burning down but they've been "downgraded."

Right now, we are both sitting out the front, monitoring the flames.
There's nothing else we can do to be ready.
IF it comes close enough to us, we have an evacuation plan in place.
We have 2 refuges - one just down the road in the form of the biggest dam in the area, or if we can get through we will head to the estuary and park the cars just in the water before heading out into the middle ourselves.

Forest fires make a lot of smoke. Like, a LOT. They stink. They hurt your eyes and lungs if you're in them for too long. They even hurt your eyes and lungs if you're hundreds of miles from them along a distant valley or mountain pass. If they threaten your house, you know it before someone tells you to leave, because it's smoky and exceedingly unpleasant.

You're sitting out in front of your house on your tablet and phone, I'm going to go ahead and guess drink in hand, LOVING that you can say "A fire is really close to my house!! We may have to evacuate! We've done all we can, we have so much to lose! We're monitoring!"

But it's not and you're not. You may have some small fires close by, that part might be true. But your house isn't in danger, and you know it. If it were, you'd have your child miles away by now.

You just like the idea that you're in the epicenter of SOMETHING, even if you have to make the something up yourself.
