I listened to this song over and over and over when I was 15:

When I was born, they looked at me and said,
"What a good boy, what a smart boy, what a strong boy,"
And when you were born, they looked at you and said,
"What a good girl, what a smart girl, what a pretty girl."
We've got these chains hanging round our necks
People want to strangle us with them before we take our first breath.
Afraid of change, afraid of staying the same....

-The Barenaked Ladies, "What a Good Boy" (1992)

It made me feel a little less alone when I got frustrated with what the rest of the world assumed I wanted, and expect from me, simply because I happened to have been issued two X chromosomes at birth.

Was there a song like that for you?

I can barely remember being 15, except that it was a hard time. Growing up is hard, awkward.

I like this thread, it makes me think.

I love this thread! I have just been listening to lots of good songs on You Tube reminiscing...

The album I would always have on repeat when I was a teenager was Pearl Jam's ‘Ten’. A song which always sticks out as being one of my favourites for a number of years was Electrasy's Morning Afterglow - "She's the only one for me and she's got everything I need...turn my back and run away"

I also had (and still do have) such a soft spot for Lola, by The Kinks. I always want to dance when I hear that song. "Girls will be boys and boys will be girls, it's a mixed up muddled up shook up world, except for Lola...L-o-l-a- Lola"

Thanks for posting this - I'm going to stalk it to see the replies - and so much love for Barenaked Ladies.

Well I left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said dear boy I'm gonna make you a man

Just keeping it going, love that song

I do love Pearl Jam. But I was your age when they came out. A great, great band. I was more Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, etc. I had 8-tracks. (look it up ;))

Barenaked ladies are fun. I never thought about it the way the op expressed.

Hooray for another Lola fan!

BiGuyMN - I can go for a bit of Aerosmith myself (Dream On is a particular favourite) and Black Sabbath (Paranoid) - good, classic rock.

I'm listening to Florence and the Machine a lot

Yes! Howl - just this: Screaming in the dark, I howl when we're apart/Drag my teeth across your chest to taste your beating heart - she's amazing!

I love that song too, Vixen. :) It's one of the things I listen to over and over now.

Lola surprised me the first time I actually listened to it. I'd heard it lots of times in the background - on the radio, in stores etc - without really paying attention to what they were singing about. When there was finally not a bunch of other stuff going on, it made me do a mental double-take and smile.

David Bowie has always spoken for me.
"All the young Dudes"
"Ch-ch-ch-changes"
"Heroes"
"John (I'm only dancing)"
And so many more...

a song a friend wrote for me and I had it put to music

The Young Like it Hot

v.1
"young and lean a sweet kind of mean
the taste for money you just can't miss.
blonde and nice, eyes blue as ice
the kind of lips that you'd kill to kiss.

chorus:

you know you want her, just gotta have her and everything she got.
and if you're game she'll light your flame because the young--, like it hot.

v.2
to feel the fire of her desire,
there almost nothing that I wouldn't risk.
here or there baby anywhere,
I'd plant a wet one on both sets of lips.

:chorus:

v.3
I don't need eyes to taste those thighs,
the perfection of a perfect fit.
nothing left to say let me have my way
a tongue lashing that you won't forget.

:chorus:
