The age old question, why don't women pay men for sex?

I'm not even talking about in a relationship, but outright prostitution. Men have always paid women for sex, its considered the "oldest profession" for women to sell sex. Occasionally men pay men for sex, and rarely (though increasingly these days) women will pay women. Yet, women paying men for sex still remains exceedingly rare. Usually when it does occur at all its a rich old widow with a boy toy, rather then paying a stranger for a one time act. Even male strip clubs for women, which were a fad in the 70s and 80s, have all but disappeared.

The question is why this is the case. Is it that women don't need to pay for it (even an ugly woman can go out to a regular bar or club and find a guy for casual sex with no problem)? Are they just by nature more particular than men? Or do they not really like sex, or perhaps not really like men that much? Are they just smarter than men and not dumb enough to pay for it?

I've never gotten a full and completely satisfactory explanation to this question. It seems its probably a combination of the above factors, with no clear "smoking gun" explanation. What do others think?
