Is anyone else a board game addict?

I just read this article at The Atlantic about Settlers of Catan. Has anyone played this? Is it as awesome as it sounds?

And where does it fit in the board game hierarchy?

Scrabble:* Nerdy, but socially acceptable for adults to play
Risk: Nerdy, not socially acceptable outside of nerd conventions or long-lasting family feuds (not that there's anything wrong with those, of course :D)
Parcheesi: Not nerdy, socially acceptable in limited circles
Sorry: Not nerdy, not socially acceptable, and rather dull.

Feel free to quibble with my list, or add your favorites.

*I realize that traditionally Scrabble wasn't played on a board, but I'm calling it a board game.

How could you leave off Monopoly? That's the ultimate board game. :D

I do enjoy Scrabble though ... it expands your vocabulary and makes you think.

I’m afraid my experience in this area is limited to a few games of Ludo as a child.

And some Monopoly, which immediately showed I shouldn’t try for a career in real estate. :D

Blech, monopoly. It takes too long, it doesn't lend itself to cut-throat alliances they way a game like Parcheesi does, and there are too many cheesy versions now.

I love Scrabble, and after reading Word Freak I forced myself to memorize all of Scrabble's two letter words. My husband and I keep all of our old score cards.

Settlers is a fantastic game; I'm not huge on too many strategy games but I like this one. Also a big fan of Scrabble. I like spatial type games too, one of my favorites is called Blokus.

I've been playing Scrabble forever. My mom loved it and brought the board out whenever she could talk someone into playing a game or two.

My daughter's game says Chutes and Ladders:confused:

I play a lot of games with my 7yo

We like

Enchanted Forest
Parcheesi
Trouble
Sequence
Sorry
Life
Pay Day
Mystery Date
Don't Wake Daddy is awesome:D
Head of the Class
Bella Sara board game

Sleeping Queens is super fun but it is a card game, so is Rat a Tat Cat.

What age range is Settlers of Catan? I have seen it at B&N.

They're not board games, but do kids still play 'Old Maid', 'Hearts' and 'Go Fish'?

When my daughter was little, she loved a board game called 'Uncle Wiggly' about a rabbit. I wonder if they still make that one?

Settlers of Catan is my favourite board game, and I've played a lot of different board games. I own the base game and 2 expansions for it, along with the 5-6 player upgrades for Settlers and Cities & Knights.

If you combine Monopoly and Risk together and make it even more awesome than that you get Catan. Age range is really 10+ though the box says 12+ (they do make a kid's version according to the catalog that comes in the game box though).

Seriously fun game that I highly recommend. Just had a Settlers of Catan night on Sunday, everyone had a blast.

They do! But when I went to order it on Amazon for Christmas, they were out.

Oh yes, and War and Crazy Eights and so on.:)

When my husband is local, we have family game night. We make pizzas and salad and each pick a fave game or two and play, play play.

That's very nice. More families need to do what yours does ... interact ... some kids live in a virtual world with limited human contact and are social cripples. Not good for getting along in life. :(

That settles it. This is going on the top of my birthday wish list.
And can I be your friend so I can come to one of these nights? ;)

Clue??????? The ultimate in cheesy competition.

There's a problem with Clue/Cluedo. Every time I sit down to play, I can't help but think that the campy movie with Tim Curry and Madeline Kahn is so much better than the board game.

We play

Scrabble
Cluedo
Monopoly
Snakes and ladders
Backgammon
Draughts
Chess
Ludo
Chinese chequers
Yahtzee
Old maid
Solitaire
Snap
Happily families
Operation

There is probably more

I must have missed that film. But the original board game provoked some real thinking.

Scrabble rules board game or not.

I was addicted to Clue at one point but can't get into it anymore.

Not sure if it is considered a board game but although I suck at it I like Chess.

When I was a kid there was a game called Mouse Trap that was a lot of fun.

Good choice! Settlers is my game of choice for nights when I need to mingle different groups of people. The dedicated board gamers already have fond memories of it, and it's quick to teach to people who've only played more mainstream games like Cranium or Clue.

Blokus! Have you ever played Quirkle? It's another spatial game. I've heard it recommended in a few places, but haven't tried it yet.
