The Earth Day 2011 Contest Support Thread

I've noticed that in the announcement post for this year's competition, they don't mention ecology as an acceptable entry theme, though I'm pretty sure I saw it listed in previous years' posts. I can't tell if this omission is deliberate or accidental.

If ecology is a suitable entry basis, could someone let me know if a story based around a guy nursing an injured wild animal back to health would qualify as an 'ecology' story? I have an idea along these lines that I might be able to do something with before the competition closes.

It fits the theme, in my opinion. If you want to give it another dimension, just have the culmination of the story take place on Earth Day.

I think Earth Day is vague enough that you can pretty much do anything you could make an argument for. It's a lot harder to say something doesn't fit the theme than, say, Nude Day. I would go for it!

To delete? To not delete? What are the ethics surrounding comment removal?

The only comment I’ve ever deleted (so far) was spam. Personally, I would rather the thread look like an honest conversation than to look like the blurb pages of a paperback, with only high praise allowed. When readers are invited to post feedback, they should feel free to post positive and negative reactions, so long as they're reasonably civil.

LettersFromTatyana, if you’re worried about an ignorant comment misleading potential readers, the best move might be to post your own comment pointing out the critic’s mistake.

Sometimes the best way to deal with critics is to let them expose themselves. I remember once there was an incest story about Sarah Palin seducing her son or some such, and though the story was not political (the author clearly chose Palin for her looks alone -- just as John McCain did), outraged Tea-Baggers posted rants attacking the author and insisting he must be (wait for it) gay. It was hysterical! A guy writes an incest fantasy, and Tea-Baggers think the meanest thing they can say about him is, “I bet he’s attracted to other men.” The author must have been a fellow-Republican because he deleted those embarrassing comments promptly.

Dude, I gotta say, I have to agree with PrincessErin regarding the rambling. I just clicked on your story to see if you were right about her bombing your entry, and I found it a pretty hard story to get in to. You start off with a story about winning a recycling competition, and you hint at an interesting but secret ulterior motive that your main character had for participating. Then you go off on some weird spiel that leads to a couple paragraphs of unrelated commentary about Japanese porn. When that's over, you begin the next line with "Getting back to the recycling..." but you aren't getting back to the recycling! Instead, you begin describing the first time your protagonist saw his sexy neighbor, interspliced with extensive commentary about his old neighbor, which doesn't seem relevant. At least not in great volume, like you provide.

I haven't voted on your story as I only read the first page, but I just wanted to suggest that maybe PrincessErin isn't some nut out to get you, maybe she does read your story and she's just a critic saying what she genuinely thinks.

I'll admit that often genuine critics do get it wrong, and I agree PrincessErin's criticism could've been much more constructive. But, if I may offer some advice, try not to let it bug you so much.

Every author get's a frustratingly vague critic trashing their work every now and then, it happens. But judging by the numerous posts you've made about her, the way you've given her a taunting nickname, and the way your trashing both her work and her physical appearance, it seems like you're letting her get way too deep under your skin. And to be quite honest, it makes you seem a bit petty.

If you two don't get along (as you obviously don't), don't bait her. Just leave things be and the Lit admins will wipe any 1-bombs she makes off your story scores, anyway.

Did you know that I submitted 30 stories in the Valentine's contest and she wrote bashing comments on 20 of them?

Don't you realize that she doesn't read anyone's story?

I don't bait her. She bashes my stories, everyone one of them.

Moreover, take a ride on the wild side and go through her page of 750-1,100 word stories and read a couple of those, until your eyes glaze over.

I have my own style. If you don't like my stories, don't read them. Yet, why does she bash them? She doesn't read them. She just bashes them and down votes them.

Obviously, there's something seriously wrong with the woman...Dude.

So I finally finished my story and submitted it. So excited. I love reading contest stories but there is some thrill to having my own story posted.
I'm off tomorrow so going to see how long it takes for me to get the minumum 25 votes. Normally I never have a problem with votes although most are low votes.

I'm not letting this thread get me down

First draft is done.

Now, to let it sit for a day or two, and work on something else to clear it out of my head.

Ended up 17k words... Ouch. I was aiming for 12. Oh well, 17 is what the story wanted to be, so 17 it is.

Tracking time again, boys and girls

Two new stories bring us up to 42.

Looks like that sweep that ran through recently was pretty painful. Average score is down to 4.12 and the median is down to 4.14. Most stories went down in score.

Up to 6493 votes with an average of 162 and a median of 67

Mine vote totals haven't gone down at all, either. Only I know there are some votes in need of sweeping; the only way I got through my in-law weekend was to allow myself to check my view page every five minutes. (I wanted to see the trolls in action. After all, from what I'd been led to believe, contests are like troll Olympics!)

With some simple math, I could tell when the one-bombs came. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but they seemed to happen when my score on the new category page reached a certain number. It was like watching waves; a few ones would smack my score down, it would slowly rise back to that number, and then get smacked back down again. It hasn't reached that number since, but I got another one between 6:15 and 6:20 (this morning's in-law-induced insomnia).

So... I hope there are more sweeps.

I’ve felt for a couple of years that the QUEEN should put the EARTH DAY CONTEST out to pasture. That it’s outlived its usefulness. I mean how many trees can be hugged before we die of boredom? That we should try something else for a change. And darkboys figures just highlight the problem.

The 45 stories have only been FAVORITED 94 times! db doesn’t give us the average for this one but even I can figure out that it’s about 2.

And the 323 comments average out to about 7. I wonder how many of these comments have been made by non contestants? What do you think the average would be if we didn’t count the ones made by contestants. 1? 2 maybe?

Dear QUEEN LAUREL , please do not include this contest on the 2012 list.

And will you never realize that allowing multiple entries from idiots is a disservice to our READERS, our WRITERS, and to the SITE itself?
