Been thinking about the "ignore" button lately. I've never used it and I never will. This is just me...(NOT making judgments about anyone else)...I like to set tests for myself. Kind of like how I'll never, ever pass off my fishing rod, no matter how big and strong the fish, no matter how long the fight. I'd rather lose the fish than let someone help me and that's just my thing. Same, same. I'll quit the board before I use the ignore button. Weird, I know.

Anyway, I'm curious, how many people do you have on "ignore" and what are the sorts of reasons you put someone on ignore?

How do you feel these boards would be different without that feature?

I've never had to use this feature that much. I've only used it once when someone kept on sending spam PMs.

the iggy button

i used to only have one person on iggy. they continuously sent me PM's that were pretty nasty. now i have 10 people on iggy. they are all posters on the GB, and most of them were obvious spammers. i didn't want to click on the links, so i put them on ignore. there was one person i put on iggy for the sole reason that every time i read their posts, i felt sick to my stomach. i don't put people on iggy for being asses. sometimes the best one liners come from complete asses.

i'm pretty sure that i'm on at least one person's iggy list.

I have lots and lots of people on ignore.

Lots of reasons.

It's a bit like taste in food. I won't eat certain things and I don't feel I should take everything in without judgment.

My mind has opinions and tastes and if I reasonably "taste" someone and decide I don't want a repeat performance, I feel I've given them a fair shot and now I can respect my own interests by not getting into it.

Same way I'm not going to be drawn into the merits of foods I like or dislike, I don't have to consume what I don't wish to consume, but everyone else can make their own choices and it's about my personal whims and judgments.

For instance, I just can't stand cooked bell pepper. Even smelling it makes a dish unpalatable. I'm cool with everyone else having it, but I won't have it fed to me.

I've had a lot of conversations about this, regarding whether or not all art, all people, all points of view should be respected and...that's cool. I've got limited interests and resources and concerns, so my ignore list helps me edit out what doesn't interest me. Same way saying "no peppers" on a dish means I can eat it without wincing.

I was a purist at one point and then eventually someone will be so long winded and so crack induced that they make following a conversation harder, or I just finish with their shit. I'm very slow to use it but I have a handful of times in however many years.

I don't think an absence of an ignore button would change the site much, honestly.

there are 3 people on my iggy list. they are there either because they have continuously said disrespectful things about me or my Master, or because i just find them to be completely unbearable to read and they won't go away. i like to cut down on any negativity in my life as much as possible, it's all part of me staying emotionally healthy.

this and other message boards would be far less without the iggy feature.

I have one person on ignore. Someone who was repeatedly rude, made attacks against me and disrespectful. Funny. I never thought I'd have to use that button.

I use it too, although not very often. I tend to ignore people who get me riled up when I read their stuff. If I find myself furiously pounding away at the keyboard in response to something written on the boards or in the PMs, then I take a step back and decide whether or not this is someone I should be corresponding with.

I used to post on the author's hangout. In the past three years it has filled up with GB-type trolls, and I recently realised that my ignore list was longer than my list of friends there. :(

Ditto, for the the most part. I don't think my ignore list quite hit the same number as my list of friends, but the competition was fierce. Thus I'm here about 95% of the time that I visit Lit these days and have not been back to the AH in several weeks.

Yup. People who PM me without reading my profile. I'm happy to entertain filthy PMs just try and make them semi relevant.

I don't have anyone on ignore. I just very easily skip people who bore or irritate me.

I think I have three people on ignore. One is an old regular who had serious issues with my cookie jokes and, unlike others who do, couldn't manage to not make nasty cracks at me every time she saw an opening. The other is an old friend, who isn't a friend anymore, and also looks for openings to make nasty cracks. In both cases I choose to be the adult, and not engage them in their crap.

The other person is that idiot troll. I can't help but play with him, he's so amusing, so I'm hoping if I ignore him he'll go away. When he goes away he'll go off my ignore list.

Of course that won't work if people don't follow my example. *stern look at chy* :p

You are so very non-controlling!

I totally admit it, I find it difficult to ignore people that give out bad information, that say racist or sexist crap, or exhibit a lot of willful ignorance. I want to protect people from the bad information, and the insults, and pound some sense into the ignorant.

I have to use the ignore function for the sake of my sanity.

Popping in quickly...busy work day.

I tried to participate in the AH. I thought, 'Hey, I'm a writer, this should be my kind of crowd!' ACK! What a mess. No thanks. It's only a step above the GB. Blech. And the GB? That forum hurts my brain in the worst way. Every time I go near that board, (and those times are rare), I feel like beating everyone on there with the Grammar Bat, while force feeding them copies of Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style".

It was quite a feat, but I counted. 336 people on my ignore list.

Holy crap!

Anyway, I'm curious, how many people do you have on "ignore" and what are the sorts of reasons you put someone on ignore?

There's a handful of reasons people go on my ignore list.

1) Something to do with the avatar. This is, more often than not, a privilege reserved for guys with penii in their avatar, but there was a brief period where I saw people with images of their eyes in close-up there and, as some people will know, I have a massive phobia about that.

2) I find the person's views about one or multiple subject too objectionable to leave them un-ignored. These are people who, if I left them unblocked, I'd have a hard time not responding to everything they say with snark and, while that's alright on occasion, it probably wouldn't endear me to most people over time.

3) The person has been disruptive and offensive either to me or the community at large. There's a fair few of them too.

Only thing I wish they'd change about the ignore function is that at the moment, ignoring a user blanks threads started by them from the front page of a particular forum. That's the only reason I haven't ignored WriterDom. Also:

That's obscene. I mean, I'm impressed, but blimey.

Six years here in July, and I have six people on my Iggy list. I know one of them still posts here (BAJackAss), and *perhaps* one other still does, but just to cover the bases, I'm not taking the old ones off - they might come back and piss me off again.

ETA: 336??? Holy moly!

I use my iggy button to get rid of racist, homophobic idiots and asshole Alts.

I haven't had to iggy anyone in a about a year...but if I had to, the above is the sort of idiotic butt munches who would be located there.

I don't ignore anyone. Maybe there are times when I should. I like to read the posts and sometimes I've even continued a conversation just for the fun of it, when it probably was better off that I didn't. Eh, some people's humor...

I'm not up much on the ignore technology. How does it work? Say I had the OP on ignore. Would I not even know about this thread?

The reason I have so many is because I frequent almost all English parts of the board.

I run into a lot of spammers, trolls, alts, etc.

To me, there's no difference in ignoring them by putting them on my ignore list, and ignoring them by just pretending their posts aren't there. Why bother looking at the name and going "Oh, I'm not supposed to read him/her.", when I can allow my ignore function to do the work for me? :D

No, this thread wouldn't show up at all on your page.

Thanks. I've never looked much into this. I've noticed some people have AVs turned off, too, for vulgar content, etc.

Oh, and because you replied to my post, I guess I'm not one of the 336. That's good to know.:D

Oh sweetie, you've never even given me cause to pause.

Yes, there are a lot of things you can do to minimize annoyance on this site. It makes it a much more pleasant place.

Sometimes, I turn signatures off, because some people have truly massive and/or annoying sigs that just irk me. Sometimes I have to bomb their Avatar with forum management because it's a penis that I didn't ask to see, etc. There are a lot of ways to keep the air freshener on, you know what I mean?

I don't have anyone on ignore. I don't think I ever will.
