Please!

Okay. I totally get that a person pays for fame with a lost of privacy--whether or not that's right or fair, it's the way it is, and has always been. Whether you're famous for being Charles Dickens or a Vanderbilt or a prince, anyone who has ever gained fame has had their life scrutinized--who they date, who they marry, who they have an affair with....

But I've hit my limit with Tiger's public apology. WTF? I know we're still a puritan country, but I thought we'd gotten past forcing adulterers to stand in the public square with scarlet "A's" on their chests. Put his dalliances in the newspapers just because it'll sell if you like, but the only one deserving of an apology is his wife and that outta be done in private.

Unless, of course, Tiger's been having a lot more affairs than any of us suspected and needs to apologize on tv because it'd take too long to call each girl up and apologize over the phone....

I saw his mother in the front row. I'll bet she has talked to him very honestly and wanted to make sure he stuck to the script.

I saw the remorse in his eyes and got the message, "I'm oh so sorry, please give me back my life. Oh and the millions I forfeited, I mean the Bankers got bailed out. What's a little nooky?", please."

I feel his pain, but I like to watch him play.

I agree completely: what happened is between him, his wife and the companies that pay him millions to endorse their products.....no one else matters.....his best course of action is to pick up a club and sink a few ball into some holes.....Then it would all go away.....winning a couple of tournaments would silence the naysayers and fuel the gainsayers......
Entirely too much attention has been paid to this situation.....It doesn't say much about us as a culture that we obsess about it.....it's not like he's been elected to public office on a purity platform like Mark Sanford, David Craig, or others of the Christian right......He's just a guy with too much money and not enough guidance in his background: remember that his father was a boozing, womanizing, ex-marine.....there was a lot to like about Earl Woods.....

He's a superb golfer, and in the public eye that should be sufficient, but it isn't. Society enjoys building people up and then tearing them apart...plus he had a squeaky clean image...he shilled for Buick f'r craps sake...now that's in the toilet and the advertisers are not pleased. Hence the 'boo hoo hoo I'm a sex addict and I'm sorry' crapola.

As long as he was moistening his wick in different lamps and getting away with it he wasn't sorry.

If he'd promoted absence or safe sex or the institution of marriage or anything having to do with squeaky clean living, then I'd be all right about this public apology. But he only promoted things like cars and watches. Cars and watches aren't squeaky clean. They're not even restaurants like McDonalds that are all about kids and family.

So, while I get the betrayal of that squeaky clean image, I still don't think the public needs or deserves a public apology from him. It just rubs me really wrong because it seems to hypocritical of our society to demand that, as if he cheated on us, when we're so sex obsessed ourselves.

Yep, I think the best path for him is to go to saying it's a private matter--and then to play golf but just do without the commercial endorsements. He doesn't need them; he's rich as all get out. And there's no reason but the commercial endorsements for him to have to give the time of day to anyone curious about his private life.

Roger that. I don't think that apology was to the public...rather it was to the companies that paid him ridiculous sums to hawk their products. Of course it's hypocrisy...hypocrisy is rampant in today's society...GM doesn't want to alienate the old farts that buy Buicks is all...along with whoever else might decide to buy the other stuff he's pimped for.

Would the old men who buy Buicks really be upset that he was cheating on his wife with many women?

Hell, he stayed out of the spotlight since Thanksgiving and the shit storm got worse. At least, he can disappear again, do what ever he has to do and maybe people will find somebody else to follow. I had more interest in the escaped Zebra that got lose on the 75/85 interchange in Atlanta during rush hour. Now, that was entertainment.

Being an old fart myself, although I have never owned a Buick, I wasn't the least bit upset. :) :) I was just envious. Those aren't just women, those are HOT women, and I would have affairs with them if I had a chance. :p

Personally, I have been tired of hearing about it for a long time. :(

Maybe he should shill for Trojan or Sheik?

"Always smooth, going in the hole!"

Here's what I would have urged him to say:

"Okay, I failed as a husband and a father. So be it. I am granting my wife a divorce, and a $50M settlement. She and my children are better off without me.

Now, I am going back to the two things that I know I am good at: putting it in the hole, and putting it in the hole.

Any of you don't like that, you can blow me. Thank you. Good afternoon."

You obviously didnt get your fill on teevee cuz here you are dragging Tiger Woods into AH.

Widen this out a little.

Why is it that someone in public eye's private life is so important, except to sell newspapers etc. Let us not forget that some of the less scrupulous sections of the news media have broken peoples lives and reputations on a whim.

If that person's private life does not have a material effect on the way that he or she conducts themselves in their public role or duties then what is private should stay private.

So often though the bottom line is the bottom line. This is nothing new, it's nature:

Money=Power=Sexual attraction.

Is it not, after all, in herding animals, I include most animals that form social groups, that it is the Alpha Male that gets to mate all the females. And the human race when stripped of all the trappings of civilisation is only just a more intelligent species of herding animal.

Nonsense. Your alpha male hypothesis doesnt explain the explosion of knuckle walkers and mind droolers swamping societies across the planet.

No, I contend its the ability to jabber WHAZZMUHCHEK thats the real Siren's call to modern females. A disability check is as good as Old Money.

I feel SO bad for his unknowing, unwitting victims who, I'm sure were misled by his silver tongue and their lack of internet access. But then, isn't Tiger also a victim. A victim of his fame and and money and irresistible and overpowering urge to bed lookalikes. So he must atone. And atone publicly because, truly, we are ALL victims of Tiger's betrayal as well...

Wait.

What's that?

Oh.

Okay.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I've just been informed that Tiger simply taking the necessary steps to repair the brand name.

Carry on.

Tiger Woods is only sorry about two things. The first is that his golf career is in the toilet, all his sponsors have left him and he will never make the big bucks again. The second is he thought he was going to pick up chicks at the SEX REHAB CLINIC and found out if doesn't work that way.

Couldn't have said it better. Just an alpha male who's pissed on his wife and kids, shown the morality of a sewer rat and wonders why no-one's drinking Gatorade anymore.

As a sleazy, mysoginist pig he just about puts us girlies in our place.

Well, yes, I said that. Of course it's a given that sex sells, always has and always will.

What I'm talking about here is the public apology. Which isn't the news jumping on sexual indiscretions. It's Tiger deciding (or the powers behind him deciding) that he needed to apologize to the public, not just to his wife. At that point, it's not about ravenous news or celebrity gossip. It's about a perception--by the public or by the news or by the celebrity--that the public and the celebrity are in a relationship that requires an apology from the celebrity when he goes against certain sexual mores. That somehow his cheating on his wife was equal to cheating on his fans.

 Does that make any sense to you? It doesn't to me...and it's one step too far on my bullshit meter. Never mind how newsworthy celebrities and sex are. Why does someone who didn't ever preach or try to shove monogamy down our throats, who just golfed really good and tried to sell us Buicks, have to apologize to us for having extra-marital affairs?

Tiger doesn't need endorsements to play golf and earn big bucks (on top of the pile he's already got).

They are pissed off that he got caught. Means they might get caught too.

I think it more likely that they are pissed off that it interrupted him playing golf. I think that the number of Buick owners watching golf on TV dwarfs by far the number of Buick owners having extramarital affairs.

(I had extramarital affairs when I was driving Buicks--but I wasn't old then.)

I am totally skipping over CNN and every other news channel when I surf - the guy is a golfer fer Chrissakes, not the Pope.

His fame is based entirely on the fact that he's a Black guy that can get into a country club - the whole "role model" business is strictly a construct created to sell Wheaties.

Get over it America.

All I want to know is, who the fuck is his publicist? They are either geniuses or idiots for picking such a slow news day to do this, depending on what exactly they were hoping to achieve.

What I'm talking about here is the public apology....

 Does that make any sense to you? It doesn't to me...

I have to admit that I would be quite happy to live in a News free bubble. So much of what is sold as news in this twenty four hours a day seven days a week news culture in which we now live is not news as I understand it, it is speculation or gossip:

"We understand that [whoever] will say...."

"[Uninformed (except by us)] public opinion of this is ..." And Mr / Ms. Joe Public only did the interview to get his / her face on the TV for ten seconds.

"We hear from a source at [wherever] that..."

So called celebrity, or entertainment news items usually cause me to go into hibernation mode.

The guy broke the eleventh commandment -Thou shalt not get caught. - Big deal! Plenty have been there before him and survived without this whole three ring circus.

Of course I am cynical, I never denied it!
