Hate crime bill question

My mother just came in here discussing a bill being 'piggy backed' on with a military bill..she was almost hysterical over it.

Apparently, it's worded in such a way where even if a preacher says "homosexuality is wrong but the people commiting it, we still love as God loves all of us as we are all sinners in one form or another"..that preacher can go to jail.

She's afraid it'll cause more issues...even bringing back certain organizations that died down.

Anyone know anything on this bill?

Piggybacking bills is a common practice in politics, both the left and the right do this. It's a political strategy and by putting it in with defense spending, it sort of forces Republicans to vote for it.

The sad thing is that in this day and age we have to piggyback a hate crime bill on to something else, just to ensure it passes. It should be a no brainer. The Republicans against this should be ashamed of themselves.

A preacher is not going to go to jail for saying homosexuality is wrong, that's bullshit made up by wingnuts who don't want it to pass. It sounds like something WorldNet Daily would say.

As for 'the preacher', every bit of legislation that ever comes up goes to great pains to make sure that the churches are still allowed to dispence their hate freely.
it pisses me off, but I'm also OK with it
so long as it doesn't allow them to say "gays are bad, they need to be taught a lesson so go smack them around" etc.

I'm hoping to find any info on this bill they're piggy backing on the military one because she was all upset about it.

According to her, it would claim that even speaking out against homosexuality is a hate crime and that gays were allowed to come into churches, spit on people and say they have aids now, and even have sex on the alters and whatnot. Again, according to her, when the cops were called..the 'invading' people were arrested and simply given a small fine and/or community service.

Most of her info comes from christian sources and while she accepts me being a lesbian, she's still very hyper-religious..so I have to take what she says with a grain of salt.

If anyone knows anything about this bill, please let me know? Of course, knowing her, if I showed it to her..she'd say it was doctored so christians wouldn't be slammed, yada yada yada. But still, I'm curious now.

You can get punished by a law, but if you read a certain area of the bible, as your source then you are actually breaking the law. If you are saying that shit publicly . But I think if you said, publicly you felt homosexuality was wrong, then people would frown upon the person. If the person wasn't around homophobic people.

Anyways, NJ the laws in question are H.R. 1913 and S.909. All the amendment to the Defense bill does is add “gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability” to the protected class list. If the current list, which includes things like race and religion, hasn't brought the end to civilization as we know it, I doubt protecting a few queers and cripples will either.

Regarding your mother's concerns, this paragraph explains the impact on religious pretty well:

Absolutely. This bill is supported by a wide range religious groups, including the Episcopal Church, the Presbyterian Church and many others. This legislation only applies when a person is physically attacked because of their actual or perceived identity. In other words, Fred Phelps can insult queers all day long and it's not a hate crime. If he hits me with his sign, THEN it's a hate crime.
