Hi,

As some of you may know, I'm new to HT Cafe... and I've noticed that there's a somewhat separate community for HT and HT Cafe. Can I know what the difference is? As far as I know, How To deals with people asking questions about... stuff... and HT Cafe is a place where people ask questions about... stuff (Spotlight threads are a great example of this).

It's sunday night and I'm bored and confused. Any and all answers to this question would be greatly appreciated for I am absolutely losing my mind. I haven't slept in days because I just can't find the difference between HT and HT Cafe!!! I'm dyin', here!

Thank you all.

Mac

The way I see it, the How To is for specific questions, whereas the How To Cafe is for discussion that may or may not revolve around a specific question. For example, one would find "What's your opinion about universal health care" in the How To Cafe, and in the How To, one could potentially ask "How-to file an insurance claim?"

But I could be completely off. :D

The Café came about late in 2004 for a couple of reasons:

It was supposed to be a place where people could discuss issues, particularly relationship issues, in depth.

A lot of the HT "regulars" wanted a place to chat without hijacking threads or having to brave the General Board.

Here are some threads from the very beginning:

Would you like an offshoot board to the 'How To' forum?

2004 was it that long ago?

Yup that's exactly what it was. There were a number of HT regulars that enjoyed each others' company...no, no not that way...and we often hijacked HT threads to talk with each other about off topic ideas. The HT Cafe was a way to let us chat versus asking specific HT questions.

The BDSM forum runs the same way with a BDSM Cafe. Think of the HT Cafe as having the same function.

lol thanks for that. I understand a little better now. I still thinks it's weird how some don't seem to make that leap down from HT to HT Cafe or that some don't seem to wanna' make that leap up from HT Cafe to HT.

"Having to brave the General Board". So I guess it's pretty well accepted around here that the General Board is a hostile, dark and dangerous place ... sorta' like the dark allies of the Bronx...?

Scandalous rumour and innuendo, we rarely hijacked threads* back in the day, I'm affronted and somewhat abacked too.

The GB was somewhere you had to be careful about what you said or you would be cut to ribbons by rapier wit. However in the last few years things have declined to the point where now you are likely to be clubbed by unimaginative half whit. It's more sad than scary.

Oh ok, I'm glad to see i wasn't the only one taken aback by their replies. I thought it was THE place to go to just chat and meet people... turns out it's quite the opposite. It's like the rough part of Litsville... where poor, uneducated idiots go and taunt others that step into their "territory".

You're right it is sad, and had I not stumbled upon the nice people in the HT Cafe, I probably would've left Lit...

I must say, this is one of the much more civil and interesting fora on Lit; much nicer than the General discussion board, posts seem more thoughtful and measured. It's a shame it's not a little more busy. Nice to learn how and why it came about.

The General Board is mildly entertaining. I hang out there a lot and watch them poke each other with sticks. On occasion a drama thread takes off or an old one is dredged up which makes for an amusing read, but it's a fact that you need a tough skin to mingle over there.

I was a little vague about what the HT Cafe was for, myself. Glad that's all cleared up.

It's nice to see more Litsters spending time here, it will help get things moving again.

This board was pretty busy, relatively speaking, for a couple of years starting in 2005. Good times.

People have come and gone, of course. :(

Quoll! I refuse to quote you with those bugs.

I concur.

Talktyping talktyping talktyping.

I've been hanging around the HT and the HTC for over 6 years, some times more than others. I've met some of my best friends here.
