I like 2nd life. I certainly disagree that there's not much there if you don't dig cyber (I don't), but equally I think it's of limited use in terms of doing anything 'real life'.
There's a worrying trend, especially in BDSM circles, of people trying to cross over into real life, and indeed treating you as 'dishonest' if you are simply living your second life rather than being yourself there, so IMHO as a social networking/BDSM scene/personals type thing, it's of very limited use, and probably comes with more drama than it's worth.
On the other hand, it's a fascinating cyber reality created by the users' imagination, and almost anything can happen there. I usually go there to party, listen to music, hang out with cool people and see some incredible creativity and imagination at work. I find I naturally end up hanging out with BDSM folks, but that's just due to common interest really.
If you are looking for something fulfilling on a BDSM level, I feel RL has infinitely more to offer.
It's scary to me that there is even a comparison or consideration.
Sorry I'm confused. Probably my age.
You quoted my reply saying that SL offered little in regards to BDSM, but was fun anyway - what was it that you found scary?
That threads like this even exist. That it's prevalent enough to even discuss. I honestly really don't get it. Is it like my 1st life is so horrible that I'm going to escape into a 2nd life, where I can be what I want? I mean why not just change your life if you're unhappy.
Maybe that has nothing to do with it..I have no idea. But that is scary to me. And kind of sad.
As a hobby, I can see that. I guess I was thinking of people who get too involved it it.Ah OK.
Nah, nothing like that for me... just a fun way to see what other people have in their imaginations, and meet some interesting folk.
Sure it's a bit of fun fantasy, but no more than reading a novel or watching a movie - I totally dig my real life, but I don't see why it's sad to have a hobby LOL
I'm sorry syd! I can see it being a good outlet in those circumstances.I was on second life for a while, and it was actually where I kind of discovered BDSM. I took it offline, thankfully, but not everybody can. I met people there who are in such a situation in their life that 2nd life was their only outlet. One woman I met was sick and couldn't leave the house very often, another had an online D/s relationship there because he was a local politician and couldn't risk being discovered. I don't think online BDSM (on 2nd life or elsewhere) should have a blanket condemnation, because its impossible to know everybodies situation.

Ah... OK I can agree with that. For sure I've come across people who take Second life *far* too seriously, and yeah, that's kinda sad, but it doesn't devalue the media... just reflects on them really.
A bit like the difference between going to see a Star Trek movie, and buying a uniform and insisting you are really a Klingon
For some reason I always seem to come across the latter.

00Syd - totally off topic, for which I apologise, but I just have to say thank you so much for the link to the MC5 clip in your sig - hadn't seen that before.
