I've always respected MIT's research; they possess a high degree of professionalism and thoroughness. Still, what they give is only a projection model, not a doomsday prophecy. As many simulations and models as they used, I am sure they are well aware of the impact of thousands of different variables.

What caught my eye in the article, though, was this statement concerning the recently-approved (by the House Energy and Commerce Committee) energy plan:

"This bill, when enacted into law this year, will break our dependence on foreign oil, make our nation the world leader in clean energy jobs and technology, and cut global warming pollution," said committee chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA).

That's a hell of a bold claim.

Kudos if future administrations can stick to it (if it is indeed passed this year, or at any time during Obama's tenure).

The climate changes everyday, one day it's warm the next is cool. And if man, the least populace species on the face of the earth, can affect the climate of a planet with circumference of 25,000 miles and a surface area of ... hell I'm to lazy to look it up ... then you have no brains what-so-ever.

Man does not have the capacity to infuse that much of any of the green house gases into the atmosphere. One good volcano will vent more green house gas into the air than all of mankind's emission since man's been around.

Ever seen the satellite pictures of the yellow cloud sweeping of of China and the Indian Subcontinent?

Ever seen the pictures of the damage Acid Rain does to forests; the mechanism for removing CO2 from the atmosphere?

It is paradoxically arrogant to think we can continue to use the entire atmosphere as a garbage dump without having global effects.

Whether those effects are turning the planet into an Easy Bake Oven or a Coleman Cooler, I neither know or care; but we can't continue theyway we've been going since the start of the industrial revolution -- doubling or output of combustion byproducts and simultaneously slashing, burning, and paving over the mechanisms that remove our garbage from the air.

FWIW, I do agree with you that Cap & Trade is a scam touted as redistributing wealth to the "third world" but a boondoggle that will actually redistribute more wealth to those who already have most of it.

Um, nope it hasn't. It's not a linear curve, never has been, and deviations from the median have always been predicted. The trend is still the same. As to "the quiet sun" - did you actually read the article you posted?

This has resulted in some people suggesting that a similar cooling might offset the impact of climate change.

"I wish the Sun was coming to our aid but, unfortunately, the data shows that is not the case," he said.

Prof Lockwood was one of the first researchers to show that the Sun's activity has been gradually decreasing since 1985, yet overall global temperatures have continued to rise.

"If you look carefully at the observations, it's pretty clear that the underlying level of the Sun peaked at about 1985 and what we are seeing is a continuation of a downward trend (in solar activity) that's been going on for a couple of decades.

"If the Sun's dimming were to have a cooling effect, we'd have seen it by now."
